Vocabulary Words For Children | 300 Must Know Words in Nepali

300 useful Nepali vocabulary words for children, with 30 distinct entries for every age from one to ten. The complete lists come first, with each word in Nepali Devanagari script, its English meaning and a short Nepali example sentence. Choose a word for something the child needs to communicate today, then progress towards comparing, explaining, questioning and understanding evidence.

These age headings are flexible guides, not developmental milestones. A one-year-old is not expected to speak, read or write 30 words. Caregivers may model simple language in real interactions. A ten-year-old beginner can also start with the first section in age-respectful activities. “Must know” means practically useful, not an official Nepali school list, scientific frequency ranking or diagnostic assessment.

Nepali word lists by age, 1–10

Age 1 · Age 2 · Age 3 · Age 4 · Age 5 · Age 6 · Age 7 · Age 8 · Age 9 · Age 10

Using the words · Nepali language notes · Four-week plan · Parent questions · Sources

A multiword expression counts as one useful entry, including मूल्याङ्कन गर्नु and आलोचनात्मक सोच. English glosses describe one relevant use, not every possible dictionary meaning.

How to turn Nepali vocabulary into useful communication

Begin with what the child needs. If the child wants a drink, पानी, गिलास and मद्दत have an immediate meaning. During a shared game, पालो, पर्खनु and बाँड्नु help explain the rules. For an older learner checking a claim, स्रोत, प्रमाण and प्रमाणीकरण गर्नु serve a real purpose.

Model the word in a short Nepali sentence, connect it to a real object, action or idea, listen to the learner and return to it later. Recognising a word, speaking it, reading Devanagari and writing it are different abilities. The eduKate Fencing Method can organise meaning, one useful contrast, a phrase, a complete sentence and later independent use. It is an editorial teaching routine, not a language-development milestone or guaranteed learning schedule.

Nepali language notes parents need

Nepali is commonly written in Devanagari. Although Hindi, Marathi and Nepali share this writing system, they are distinct languages with different grammar, vocabulary and everyday use. A learner may recognise letters without yet understanding Nepali sentences. For word meanings, use a Nepali–English dictionary or fluent speaker, not an approximate Hindi substitution.

Politeness changes forms of address. Nepali uses forms such as तँ, तिमी and तपाईं for different social relationships and degrees of familiarity or respect. The age-two list contains तिमी, but it is not the correct form for every person. Use the form appropriate to your family and listener.

Nouns, verbs and adjectives vary in sentences. Common verb citation forms end in -नु, such as जानु and सुन्नु. In actual speech they are conjugated or changed by other constructions. The full examples demonstrate one use; an English gloss alone does not explain the grammar.

Household and regional variation exists. Different communities may use familiar terms and pronunciation patterns that vary from the written examples. A child should not be judged deficient for using a family variety. The Nepal Academy publishes Nepali language and dictionary resources.

A flexible four-week Nepali practice routine

WeekPractical taskWhat to notice
1Choose three to five words from a real meal, story, game or family routine. The learner connects a word to its meaning.
2Reuse those words in a second story, place or conversation.Does the meaning transfer beyond one example?
3Invite a real request, choice or short explanation, with a model when helpful.Does the language communicate a purpose?
4Review uncertain meanings and compare one related pair. Can the learner apply a familiar word in a new situation?

This is a flexible set of activities, not a claim that all 300 words can or should be mastered within a month.

Questions parents ask

Should a one-year-old know 30 Nepali words?

No. Age one contains words adults may model, not compulsory speech, reading or spelling targets.

Are these the 300 most frequent Nepali words?

No. They are original editorial selections for practical communication, not a measured corpus-frequency list.

Can an older Nepali beginner start with the age-one section?

Yes. Use basic vocabulary in age-appropriate activities, such as cooking, stories, shopping or travel planning.

Is Nepali the same as Hindi?

No. Nepali and Hindi share a writing system and some vocabulary but have different grammar, preferred words and social expressions.

Why are there different forms of “you”?

Nepali has different levels of familiarity and respect, and verbs may change accordingly. Use an appropriate form for the person you are addressing.

Can Nepali develop alongside other home languages?

Yes. Multilingualism itself does not cause language delay. ASHA offers guidance for supporting all family languages through meaningful interaction.

All 300 word choices, meanings, examples and age allocations are editorial selections. References below support lexical checking or broad multilingual guidance rather than validating this exact list.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.
