Vocabulary Words For Children | 300 Must Know Words in Japanese

300 practical Japanese vocabulary entries for children, with 30 different words or expressions in each age section from 1 through 10. The complete Japanese word lists come first. Every row includes the Japanese script, a concise English meaning and a short natural Japanese example sentence, helping readers connect meaning with actual use.

Age is a flexible guide, not a language-development deadline. The first list contains useful words caregivers can model around a young child, not thirty words a one-year-old must speak or read. The later groups introduce more abstract expressions gradually. A ten-year-old beginner can also start with early words while doing age-appropriate activities. These are editorial selections, not the statistically most frequent 300 words or a Japanese school syllabus.

Each useful expression counts as one entry, even when it contains more than one written element. English glosses give the meaning relevant to the example, not every dictionary sense. Japanese does not separate all words with spaces as English does.

How to make Japanese vocabulary useful

Start with a meaningful situation rather than memorising thirty disconnected words. If a child wants water, 水 matters. When building with blocks, 大きい, 小さい and 比べる may help express a choice. Older learners can apply 事実, 意見 and 証拠 while checking information.

Use the word in a whole sentence, connect it with a real object or idea, allow a response, and revisit it in a changed situation later. A child may understand a word before reading its kanji, writing it or using a polite verb form. These are related but different tasks. The eduKate Fencing Method can help structure a meaning, contrast, phrase, sentence and later independent use, but it is not an official developmental test.

Japanese language notes parents need

Writing combines scripts. Japanese normally uses hiragana, katakana and kanji together. A younger learner might recognise the spoken word or a kana form before understanding its kanji spelling. The table uses ordinary written forms, not an age-by-age school kanji requirement. For an unfamiliar kanji word, look up its kana reading using a trusted dictionary or listen to a fluent speaker. The goo Japanese dictionary is one possible source for reading and meaning checks.

Particles matter. Sentences such as 水を飲みます and 公園に行きます include particles that clarify relationships. Memorising an English translation of each noun or verb will not automatically produce a grammatical Japanese sentence.

Politeness and pronouns depend on context. A familiar ありがとう differs from the more formal ありがとうございます. The pronoun あなた exists, but Japanese speakers often use names or omit pronouns when the context is clear. Teach expressions according to the people involved, rather than placing “you” into every translated sentence.

Verbs have changing forms. A dictionary verb such as 食べる becomes 食べます in a polite nonpast sentence; the negative, past and requests also have their own forms. Use complete natural examples, and distinguish spoken vocabulary from reading or writing milestones.

A gentle four-week Japanese vocabulary routine

WeekPractical activityWhat to notice
1Choose three to five meaningful words for one real routine or story. The learner connects the word with something they understand.
2Repeat those words in another game, room or picture book.Recognition carries beyond the first example.
3Model a sentence, and invite a real choice or short explanation. The learner uses language to communicate a meaning.
4Revisit uncertain meanings, compare one pair and choose the next useful words. The learner applies a familiar word in a new setting.

These are adaptable tasks, not a promise that 300 words can be mastered in four weeks. An older learner may focus on kana, kanji readings and sentence structures, while a young learner simply hears the words in responsive conversation.

Questions parents ask

Must a one-year-old say thirty Japanese words?

No. These are words an adult may model in ordinary life. They are not developmental deadlines or an assessment of a child’s speech.

Are these the most common 300 Japanese words?

No. They are original editorial selections arranged by useful functions and gradually more abstract ideas.

Should a beginner learn kanji immediately?

Start with an appropriate mix of listening, meaning, kana and kanji based on the child’s readiness and goals. These age labels are not a kanji teaching timetable.

Can a ten-year-old beginner use the age-one section?

Yes. Use the same important words in mature activities such as planning a meal, reading a short manga extract or preparing a journey.

Do all Japanese speakers say a word in exactly the same way?

Regional and social variation exists. Learn the expression in a complete conversation and note differences in politeness or context.

Can children learn Japanese while using other family languages?

Yes. Learning several languages does not by itself cause a language delay, as explained by ASHA.

Your next useful step

Choose one expression that helps someone understand or say something today. Show its meaning, use it in a natural sentence, and revisit it later.

Explore the connected learning guides

Choose the question that brought you here. Open one useful guide, try a small task, and stop when you have what you need.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
