Vocabulary Words For Children | 300 Must Know Words in Kannada

300 useful Kannada vocabulary words and expressions for children, with exactly 30 different entries for every age from one to ten. The complete Kannada word lists come first, with an English meaning and a short Kannada example for every entry. Begin with familiar needs, then build towards describing, comparing, asking questions, discussing evidence and making informed decisions.

These ages are flexible editorial themes, not developmental deadlines. A one-year-old is not expected to say, read or write thirty Kannada words. Caregivers can model them through everyday talk. Older beginners can start with basic vocabulary in age-appropriate settings. “Must know” means useful to introduce, not a statistically ranked corpus list or an official Kannada syllabus.

Kannada vocabulary by age

Age 1 · Age 2 · Age 3 · Age 4 · Age 5 · Age 6 · Age 7 · Age 8 · Age 9 · Age 10

How to use the words · Kannada language notes · Four-week plan · Questions parents ask · References

Some entries are expressions containing several written words, and each expression counts as one practical vocabulary entry. The English gloss gives the meaning illustrated by the example, not every possible dictionary sense.

How to help a child use Kannada words meaningfully

Begin with a real reason to communicate. During a meal, ನೀರು, ಕಪ್ and ಸಹಾಯ serve immediate needs. During play, ಸರದಿ, ಕಾಯುವುದು and ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು describe turns. Older learners can examine an uncertain claim using ಮೂಲ, ಸಾಕ್ಷ್ಯ and ದೃಢೀಕರಿಸುವುದು.

Use a natural phrase, connect the word to a thing, action or idea, listen to the learner and revisit the word later. A child might understand a meaning before saying it, reading Kannada script or writing it. The eduKate Fencing Method can support a sequence of meaning, contrast, phrase, sentence and later independent use. It is an editorial teaching routine, not a formal language assessment or guarantee of progress.

Kannada language notes families should know

Kannada has its own script and grammar. Although Kannada and Telugu are both Dravidian languages and share some features, the scripts and everyday vocabulary differ. Kannada script is not interchangeable with Telugu, Hindi or Tamil script. Use a trusted fluent speaker or audio for pronunciation and Padakanaja, the Government of Karnataka dictionary app for lexical checking.

Grammar changes words in sentences. Kannada verbs can show person, number, gender, time and social respect. A headword such as ಹೋಗುವುದು (“going/to go”) appears in a natural sentence as ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಹೋಗೋಣ or another form depending on who is speaking. A bare English gloss cannot tell you all the forms.

Case suffixes and order matter. Kannada typically uses a subject-object-verb pattern. Nouns can take grammatical suffixes. For instance, ಪುಸ್ತಕ means book, while ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು can mark the book as a direct object. Teach the whole expression rather than inserting isolated Kannada words into an English sentence.

Family address is contextual. Polite verb forms, family relationship terms and local usage can differ across communities. The Government of India’s Padakanaja directory describes official Kannada dictionary resources. The age tables are original selections and are not an official ranked vocabulary list.

Four weeks of low-pressure Kannada vocabulary practice

WeekSmall activityWhat to notice
1Choose a few useful words from a familiar meal, story or game.Does the learner recognise their meanings?
2Reuse the same words in a different activity or place with a good spoken model.Does recognition carry to a new setting?
3Offer a real choice, request or short explanation, with a model when needed.Does the word help communicate a purpose?
4Revisit uncertain words, compare a related pair and choose new words by need. Can the learner apply a word beyond the first example?

The plan is flexible, not a claim that thirty or three hundred words can or should be mastered in four weeks.

Questions parents ask

Must a one-year-old speak thirty Kannada words?

No. Early sections contain useful words adults can model naturally, not compulsory developmental milestones.

Are these the 300 most frequent Kannada words?

No. They are editorial selections for practical communication, not a statistical frequency ranking.

Can an older beginner start with the age-one list?

Yes. Use basic vocabulary with age-respectful activities, such as a recipe, game or story.

Is Kannada the same as Telugu?

No. They are distinct Dravidian languages, with different scripts and grammatical and everyday-language conventions.

Why do verb forms differ from the headword?

Kannada verb forms depend on grammar and the speaker’s context. The examples show one complete sentence rather than a mechanical translation.

Can children learn Kannada alongside other languages?

Yes. Multilingualism alone does not cause language delay. ASHA explains the value of meaningful home-language interaction.

Your next useful step

Choose one Kannada word that helps with a real need or idea today. Model it, listen and revisit its meaning later.

Explore the connected learning guides

Choose the question that brought you here. Open one useful guide, try a small task, and stop when you have what you need.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
