Vocabulary Words For Children | 300 Must Know Words in Marathi

300 useful Marathi vocabulary words and expressions for children, with 30 different entries for each age from one to ten. The complete lists come first, written in Marathi Devanagari with plain English meanings and short everyday Marathi examples. Choose words for actual conversations: food, family, a question, a feeling, a comparison or a decision.

The ages are flexible learning guides, not developmental requirements. The age-one words are suggestions that adults can model; a one-year-old is not expected to say, read or write all thirty. An older Marathi beginner can start with these simple words in age-appropriate activities. “Must know” refers to the practical usefulness of the selections, not an official syllabus or a scientifically verified frequency ranking.

Expressions such as माफ करा and चिकित्सक विचार count as useful entries. English glosses explain the sense used in each example and do not replace a full dictionary definition.

How to make Marathi vocabulary useful

Start with what the learner wants to communicate. At a meal, पाणी, कप and मदत have an immediate purpose. During play, पाळी, थांबणे and वाटून घेणे help a child explain what should happen. An older learner checking information may need स्रोत, पुरावा and पडताळणी करणे.

Use a natural sentence, show what the word refers to, listen to the learner and return to it in a different situation later. Understanding a word, saying it, reading Devanagari and writing it are related but distinct skills. A child may know the concept in another family language already. The eduKate Fencing Method can structure meaning, contrast, phrase, sentence and later independent use. It is an editorial teaching routine, not an official Marathi developmental test.

Marathi language notes families should know

Marathi uses Devanagari but is not Hindi. The writing systems overlap, and some vocabulary may be similar, yet Marathi has its own grammatical forms, everyday expressions and usage. Use examples from Marathi-speaking families and teachers rather than assuming a Hindi sentence with substituted words will be natural Marathi.

Agreement and cases matter. An adjective like मोठा may appear as मोठी or मोठे depending on the noun. Verb forms also change in complete sentences. The list shows common citation words while the examples illustrate actual phrases. Use the natural sentence rather than memorising an English word-for-word template.

Regional and household usage vary. Marathi-speaking communities use different familiar names, pronouns and pronunciations. The words here are broadly recognisable written Marathi, not one compulsory family dialect. Maharashtra’s Marathi Language Department dictionary and terminology portal provides resources for standard terminology, and the Marathi Vishwakosh offers reference reading for more advanced topics.

A flexible four-week plan

WeekSmall family activityWhat to watch for
1Choose three to five useful words from one meal, picture book or daily routine. The child recognises the real-world meaning.
2Use the words in a new game, story or conversation.Understanding carries beyond the first example.
3Model a full Marathi phrase and invite a request, choice or short explanation. The word helps with communication.
4Review uncertain words, compare one contrasting pair and choose new words by current needs. The learner can use the word in a new situation.

This is a flexible routine, not a promise that all 300 entries can or should be mastered in one month.

Questions parents ask about Marathi vocabulary

Should a one-year-old say all thirty Marathi words?

No. Those are words adults can model in familiar situations, not a compulsory speech or reading milestone.

Are these the statistically most frequent Marathi words?

No. They are 300 distinct editorial choices meant to support useful communication, not a corpus-frequency ranking.

Can a ten-year-old beginner start with age-one vocabulary?

Yes. Use basic vocabulary in age-appropriate tasks such as cooking, planning a journey or discussing a story.

Is Marathi the same as Hindi?

No. The languages share a writing system and have some common vocabulary, but differ in grammar and everyday usage.

What if the word changes its ending in a sentence?

Marathi nouns, adjectives and verbs change forms according to grammatical relationships. Learn the whole phrase instead of only a bare translation.

Can children learn Marathi alongside another family language?

Yes. Multilingualism by itself does not cause language delay. ASHA recommends supporting meaningful family communication across languages.

Your next useful step

Choose one word that helps the learner express something today. Show its meaning in a real situation and use it again later.

Explore the connected learning guides

Choose the question that brought you here. Open one useful guide, try a small task, and stop when you have what you need.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.
