Singapore School Pathways & Calendar

This is the system-level owner for Singapore school pathways, annual education dates and the transitions between Primary, Secondary, SEC and post-secondary education. It is deliberately separate from tuition pages. Use it when the question is about the education system itself: eligibility, posting, official calendars, registration, examinations or the route between stages.

Start with the decision you are making

The system is changing across 2026–2028

Singapore is currently crossing several education-system boundaries at once. Full Subject-Based Banding applies from the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort, with the old Express, N(A) and N(T) stream labels phased out for those cohorts and subjects offered at G1, G2 or G3. The 2026 graduating cohort remains under the legacy GCE N(T), N(A) and O-Level examination system. From 2027, those national examinations are replaced by the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC); English Language and Mother Tongue written papers are scheduled in September, while most other written papers run from October to November. From 2028, MOE will implement the Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE) for applications to JC, MI, Polytechnics and ITE. System-state check: 26 September 2026.

Annual pages must behave like live-state owners

School holidays, examination timetables, P1 registration dates and annual posting data change by year. These pages should show the latest verified official state, the date it was checked, and the authoritative MOE or SEAB source. When the next year’s dates are not yet released, the page should say so rather than inventing a timetable.

For school-learning content, return to the Singapore Learning Library. For current syllabus, cohort and examination-format explanations, use the Curriculum and Examination Library. For family decisions about routines, support or what to do next, use the Parent Learning Support Directory. When the question becomes a tutor, class, programme-fit or locality decision, use Tuition Programmes & Locations. For subject worlds, use English, Mathematics or Science World. For the broader question of how education functions as an institution inside society, continue to Civilisation Atlas. Return to the eduKateSingapore Hub when the question moves outside the school-pathway system.

Primary sources

The Singapore education pathway as one system

This hub becomes more useful when the stages are read as transitions rather than isolated admissions events. Primary 1 registration determines an entry point; Primary schooling builds foundations and identifies support or high-ability needs; PSLE informs Secondary 1 posting; Full Subject-Based Banding allows subject-level variation; SEC records those subject levels; post-secondary admissions translate the results into the next learning environment.

Durable rules versus live-state facts

A strong education-system website must distinguish a structural rule from a dated fact. A policy such as “Full SBB uses subject levels” may remain stable for years. A timetable, registration window, COP or school holiday changes every cycle. Mixing the two creates stale pages that look authoritative after their evidence has expired.

PSLE score ranges are not promises

MOE SchoolFinder can show previous-year score ranges and the last student admitted after the posting exercise. Those numbers are evidence about a past cohort, not a reservation price for a future seat. Demand, cohort choices, affiliations, vacancies and tie-breakers can alter the next result. The PSLE score range owner therefore teaches families how to read the data rather than publishing a misleading league table.

Posting Groups are entry tools, not permanent identities

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, Posting Groups facilitate admission and guide initial subject levels. Students learn in mixed form classes and may take subjects at different G-levels according to strength, readiness and school decisions. The important shift is away from treating one stream label as a permanent description of a learner.

DSA belongs inside the pathway, not outside it

DSA-Sec changes how a student may enter a school, but it does not create a separate education system. The student still completes Primary 6, sits PSLE and enters a secondary environment with real academic, CCA and programme demands. The canonical DSA-Sec owner therefore centres evidence, talent development and school fit rather than admissions gaming.

The 2026–2028 transition needs three clocks

  • 2026 clock: final graduating cohort under the legacy GCE N(T), N(A) and O-Level examination system; current JAE terminology remains live for that transition.
  • 2027 clock: first common SEC examination, with subjects sat at G1/G2/G3 and English/MTL written papers moved to September while most other written papers remain in October–November.
  • 2028 clock: first SEC results feed into MOE’s new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise; revised JC and Polytechnic admission criteria take effect for the intake.

The new post-secondary admissions logic

MOE has announced that the 2028 PSE will replace the current main admissions exercises for JC/MI, Polytechnics and ITE, while DSA-JC, Poly EAE and ITE EAE continue. Choice order will become a PSE tie-breaker after citizenship. This is not merely administrative tidying: it is the admissions counterpart to Full SBB, because students can graduate with different combinations of G1/G2/G3 subject levels.

Use After SEC for the transition from JAE/L1R5/ELR2B2 language into the new PSE architecture.

A parent decision sequence

  1. Identify the actual decision: registration, school choice, DSA, subject level, examination date or post-secondary route.
  2. Open the canonical owner rather than a generic tuition article.
  3. Check whether the information is structural, annual or historical.
  4. Verify date-sensitive facts against MOE, SEAB, SchoolFinder or the receiving institution.
  5. Separate eligibility from fit: being allowed to choose a route does not make it the right route.
  6. Separate one examination result from the learner’s longer development.
  7. Return to learning support or direct teaching only when the underlying problem is educational rather than administrative.

Education as civilisation infrastructure

A school pathway is not only a family logistics problem. It is part of how a civilisation identifies readiness, distributes educational opportunities, develops specialised capability and maintains pathways for different strengths. The education system therefore connects directly to questions of evidence, institutions, fairness, choice, capacity and long-term human development.

When the question moves beyond “What should my child do next?” into “Why is the system designed this way, who has authority, what trade-offs are being made and how does society maintain educational capability?”, continue through World Knowledge into the Civilisation Atlas.

Authority and update rule

MOE is the primary authority for school admissions, pathways and national education policy; SEAB is the authority for national examination timetables, syllabuses and examination administration. SchoolFinder is the operational source for school-specific programme and historical posting information. eduKate’s role is to explain and connect those sources, not to replace them.

How this live-state hub stays current

Evergreen policy explainers should change only when the underlying rule changes. Annual pages are different: school holidays, registration windows, examination timetables and posting data must show the latest verified official state, the verification date and the authority. If a future calendar, timetable or operational detail has not been released, the page should say that clearly instead of inferring it from the previous year.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
