Start with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s proof of financial support page. It gives the current requirements and examples of evidence for a study permit application.
Check the amount against the application date, province or territory, family size and programme length. The official page requires funds for tuition, living expenses and transport; it also explains the first-year evidence and the plan needed for the remaining duration of a longer programme.
Did you know a university offer or scholarship does not automatically prove every required cost is covered? Admission, a designated learning institution’s letter, any provincial or territorial attestation requirement, financial capacity and the study-permit decision are separate checks.

Which official source answers your question?
| Your question | Official source | What to check |

| How is the application submitted? | IRCC study-permit application page | Correct application route, uploads and completeness |
| Is the school a DLI? | Designated learning institution list | Institution name, DLI number and programme details |
What should I check in the financial evidence?
Build the full cost picture
Start with the tuition shown by the institution, then add the current living-expense requirement and transport for the applicant and any accompanying family. Use the amount table on the live IRCC page; older figures in saved checklists may no longer match the application date.
The financial requirement is an immigration check, not a prediction of the student’s entire lifestyle budget. Keep a separate practical budget for housing, insurance, books and personal costs, while making sure the application evidence covers every category IRCC requires.
Show availability and source
IRCC says officers assess both the amount and the source of funds, and whether the money will remain available during the studies. The page lists examples such as paid tuition or housing, education loans, scholarships, bank records and support from another person.
Do not submit a large unexplained balance as if the number alone answers the question. Use consistent documents and, where needed, a clear explanation connecting the applicant, sponsor, account, income or award. Follow the visa office instructions for any local evidence requirements.
Plan beyond the first year
For a programme longer than one year, the official page requires enough financial resources for the first year and an explanation of how the full duration will be funded. A continuing scholarship, parent’s employment or another sustainable source may form part of that plan when supported by evidence.
If a scholarship covers tuition only, check what must still be shown for living costs and transport. If parents or another sponsor are helping, provide the relationship and supporting financial records requested for the actual case rather than relying on a brief promise.
Keep admission and permit checks distinct
Verify the institution through our Canadian DLI number guide. Then use our PAL or TAL guide to check whether an attestation letter or an exception applies.
A DLI listing, letter of acceptance, PAL or TAL and proof of funds each answer a different question. Submit the current documents through the IRCC route shown for the applicant; none of them alone guarantees a study permit.
