We are not trying to prove that school is a machine

One of the ideas that started this series was that schools bring many very different humans toward common events and goals.

That can look machine-like:

But the deeper conclusion is more careful.

Schools need coordination. Teachers, rooms, safety, curricula, transport, examinations and qualifications cannot operate at scale without shared structures.

The danger begins when a useful coordination layer is mistaken for a theory of the human.

Schools need to synchronise human activity without mistaking synchronisation for human sameness.

That distinction became the spine of the series.

The project begins before school: how thinking changes

Education begins with attention.

A question changes what a learner notices. An idea changes the question. People, evidence and events change the idea. A future examination date then changes which actions are worth taking now.

This first layer gives us a learner who can move through a basic inquiry cycle rather than simply receive answers.

Then we scale from one learner to the institution

Once a student enters school, their individual timeline meets a shared institutional timeline.
