Quick answer: Ideas do not develop only inside our heads. They meet other people, new evidence, unexpected events and real consequences. Sometimes those encounters confirm what we believed. Sometimes they expose an assumption we had never noticed. And sometimes the world changes so substantially that the old question itself is no longer enough. The mature response is not to change our ideas whenever something dramatic happens. It is to learn what kind of evidence should be allowed to change them.

What happens when our ideas meet the world?
That world includes people. It includes institutions. It includes accidents, discoveries, crises, wars, pandemics, technologies, failures, friendships, teachers, strangers and consequences that no individual planned.
Some events become so large that they alter the starting assumptions of societies. Some people become so important to us that a conversation with them changes the way we interpret ourselves. In both cases, something external enters the thinking process.
The sequence becomes:
Question → Idea → Encounter → Evidence → Revision → Better Question
People can challenge our representation of the world
Another person can change an idea simply by seeing something we do not.
A student may think:
I am bad at Mathematics.
A teacher watches the student work and notices something different.
You understand the Mathematics. You are repeatedly misreading what the question is asking you to find.
That is not merely encouragement. It is a competing explanation supported by observation.
The student’s original idea—“I cannot do Mathematics”—may have been built from real evidence: low marks, repeated mistakes, frustration. But the teacher introduces a distinction the learner had not made between mathematical understanding and question interpretation.
Now a new question becomes possible:
What exactly am I misreading?
One person has changed another person’s model of the problem.
Events can challenge the world that our ideas were built for
People usually change our interpretation of the world. Large events can do something more disruptive: they can change the world being interpreted.
Before an important event, a society may operate inside assumptions that are barely visible because ordinary life repeatedly confirms them.
- Air travel feels routine.
- Borders feel predictable.
- Schools are physical places children attend.
- Work happens in workplaces.
- Supply chains remain mostly invisible.
- Public-health capacity sits in the background.
- Emergency powers seem exceptional rather than immediate.
A major event can suddenly make those hidden assumptions visible.
An event changes ideas partly by revealing what we had been assuming without knowing that we were assuming it.
The event itself must remain anchored
There is an important discipline here.
When later consequences become politically, culturally or personally important, it is easy to let the later story rewrite the original event.
We should resist that.
The attacks of September 11, 2001 are a historical event. Later wars, legislation, institutions, security practices, political arguments and cultural memories are descendants of the post-9/11 world. They matter enormously, but they are not identical to the anchor event itself.
The same discipline applies to COVID-19. The pandemic was not one instantaneous event in one location. It was a prolonged global event complex involving disease transmission, changing scientific knowledge, government responses, healthcare pressure, school disruption, economic effects, vaccination, public communication and different local timelines.
Later arguments about what governments, institutions or individuals should have done do not change the underlying sequence of what happened.
Events stay anchored. Their meanings, consequences and descendants continue moving.
After is not one state
We often talk carelessly about “before” and “after”.
But after a major event, there is rarely one stable condition called after.
A better sequence is:
Before → Event → Immediate After → Adaptation → Descendants → New Normal → Next Event
Different consequences emerge at different speeds.
Some changes appear within hours. Others require legislation. Others emerge through institutional redesign. Others take a generation to become ordinary enough that people forget they were ever new.
This matters because a child born years after an event may never experience the event itself. They inherit its descendants as normal life.
9/11 changed questions about security, vulnerability and ordinary life
On September 11, 2001, four commercial aircraft were hijacked in coordinated terrorist attacks in the United States. The immediate human loss was immense. The attacks also exposed vulnerabilities in systems that millions of people had previously experienced as routine.
The event changed questions.
Instead of simply asking:
How do we move people efficiently through airports?
security systems increasingly had to ask:
How do we preserve movement while reducing the possibility that the transportation system itself can be weaponised?
The Transportation Security Administration was created in response to the attacks. The Department of Homeland Security later brought together 22 agencies and offices into a Cabinet-level department. These institutional changes became part of the descendant world created after 9/11.
But the descendants were not only organisational.
- Airport screening practices changed.
- Ideas about intelligence sharing changed.
- Questions about privacy and surveillance became more prominent.
- Emergency planning changed.
- Security entered spaces where many people had previously experienced little visible friction.
- Later plots, technologies and responses added further branches to the post-9/11 security world.
The important point is not that every later security measure has one single cause. Historical consequences form networks. Later changes can have multiple parents.
The post-9/11 world therefore cannot be understood as:
9/11 → everything that came later
It is closer to a branching causal graph: an anchor event, responses, later events, technologies, political choices and institutional learning interacting over time.
Loss can lead to learning without making the loss good
Another distinction is essential.
Societies often learn after catastrophe.
Loss → Learning → Redesign → Capability Gain
But a later capability gain does not make the catastrophe beneficial.
People died. Families lost loved ones. Survivors carried injuries and trauma. Later illness affected responders and others exposed to the disaster environment. Those human receipts do not disappear because institutions later become better at some form of preparedness.
This distinction protects historical and moral clarity:
- We can recognise learning without romanticising catastrophe.
- We can recognise capability gains without claiming that the losses were necessary.
- We can ask what was learned while still asking what should have been prevented.
9/11 also altered public-health preparedness through a nearby second shock
Less than a month after 9/11, anthrax attacks in the United States created a different form of emergency. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention worked with other agencies and state and local health departments in the response, while public-health preparedness for biological, chemical and radiological threats received greater attention.
This is a useful example of why we should be careful with simple causal stories.
The public-health preparedness environment that emerged in the early 2000s was shaped not only by 9/11, but also by the anthrax attacks and subsequent policy choices.
Later societies inherited parts of that capability even when confronting threats that were completely different from hijacked aircraft or deliberate biological attack.
An event can leave descendants that become part of the starting conditions for the next event.
COVID arrived in a world that already had history
When COVID-19 emerged, societies were COVID-naive—but they were not history-naive.
Countries entered the pandemic with different:
- public-health institutions;
- healthcare capacity;
- epidemic memories;
- digital infrastructure;
- border systems;
- emergency powers;
- levels of public trust;
- social protection;
- housing conditions;
- work arrangements;
- education technologies;
- political cultures.
That means the pandemic did not begin from a universal Year Zero.
Every society entered carrying descendants of previous events.
In the United States, post-9/11 and post-anthrax emergency-preparedness structures were part of the inherited environment. In other places, SARS, MERS, Ebola or other outbreaks had shaped institutions, public expectations and professional experience.
This does not mean that 9/11 caused the COVID response. It means historical systems have memory. Capabilities, dependencies, blind spots and unresolved weaknesses can survive one crisis and enter the next.
COVID changed what ordinary words meant
One sign that an event has changed ideas is that familiar words start carrying new questions.
School. Before the pandemic, “going to school” usually implied physical co-presence. School closures and remote learning forced education systems to ask what parts of schooling could survive when teacher and learner could not share a room.
Work. Many organisations had treated remote work as exceptional. Suddenly they had to ask which parts of work actually required physical proximity and which depended instead on coordination, trust, technology and access.
Resilience. Efficient supply chains had often been admired for minimising inventory and friction. COVID exposed a different question: how much redundancy or local capacity is worth maintaining when efficiency itself creates fragility?
Public health. Systems that had been largely invisible to many citizens suddenly became part of daily life: surveillance, testing, contact tracing, hospital capacity, vaccination, risk communication and population-level decision-making.
Trust. Public cooperation during a health emergency depends not only on rules, but on whether people believe institutions are competent, transparent and acting legitimately. WHO has subsequently emphasised trust as a major component of pandemic preparedness.
Singapore’s COVID experience changed questions about preparedness
Singapore’s official review of its COVID-19 response identified lessons that go beyond the virus itself: stronger resilience, deeper public-health expertise, improved forward planning, better use of science and technology, clearer crisis communication and stronger relationships across government, private-sector and community actors.
That is what learning from an event looks like at institutional scale.
The question moves from:
How did we handle COVID?
to:
What capabilities should exist before the next crisis arrives?
That second question has a longer life.
The same event does not produce the same idea in everyone
We often talk about a society “learning” from an event as if millions of people receive the same experience.
They do not.
During COVID, one person experienced infection. Another lost work. Another worked in an intensive-care unit. Another attended school through a screen. Another cared for an elderly parent. Another owned a business unable to operate normally. Another developed a vaccine. Another lived in a country with very limited access to vaccines or medical care.
The event was shared globally, but its receipts were not evenly distributed.
Receiver conditions mattered:
- age;
- health;
- housing;
- income;
- occupation;
- family structure;
- digital access;
- trust;
- state capacity;
- local policy;
- community support.
Two people can therefore live through the “same” historical event and emerge with very different ideas about risk, government, technology, medicine, work, schooling or community.
People often carry events to us
Most of us do not directly experience every event we think about.
We receive events through people:
- witnesses;
- journalists;
- teachers;
- scientists;
- doctors;
- historians;
- politicians;
- family members;
- survivors;
- institutions;
- friends;
- strangers online.
This means people do not merely change our ideas through argument. They often determine which part of an event becomes visible to us.
A healthcare worker may make visible the pressure inside a hospital. A student may make visible the experience of remote learning. A business owner may reveal a different consequence of restrictions. A statistician may show a pattern that no individual witness can see. A historian may place the event in a longer sequence.
Each perspective can add evidence. None automatically contains the whole event.
A powerful person can change an idea—but authority is not evidence by itself
People influence us unequally.
Teachers, experts, leaders, parents and admired public figures can shift a learner’s beliefs rapidly because the learner assigns weight to their judgement.
Sometimes that trust is deserved. Sometimes it is not.
A mature learner therefore asks:
- What does this person actually know?
- What did they directly observe?
- What evidence supports their claim?
- What incentives or constraints shape what they say?
- What could prove them wrong?
- Are other credible observers seeing the same thing?
People can open our minds without becoming substitutes for evidence.
Events can also teach the wrong lesson
Experience is not automatically understanding.
If a student fails one examination after revising with flashcards, they might conclude:
Flashcards do not work.
But perhaps the cards covered definitions while the paper tested transfer. Perhaps revision began too late. Perhaps the student recognised answers without being able to retrieve them. The event is real; the interpretation may still be wrong.
The same danger exists at societal scale.
A dramatic event can make one explanation emotionally compelling before the evidence is sufficient.
The fact that an event changed us does not prove that the lesson we took from it is correct.
This is why counterfactual thinking matters
Naive before-and-after reasoning can mislead.
If something changed after an event, we cannot automatically conclude that the event caused all of the change.
We should ask:
- Was the trend already changing beforehand?
- What other events happened in the same period?
- Would part of this change probably have happened anyway?
- Which parts are directly connected to the event?
- Which later developments have multiple causes?
This makes historical reasoning more demanding, but also more honest.
The descendants of an event become the environment of later learners
Children are born into worlds whose institutions already contain old events.
A teenager passing through airport security today does not need to remember the pre-9/11 airport to experience a descendant of 9/11.
A student using a learning platform after COVID may experience digital practices that became more ordinary because schools and institutions were forced to expand remote capabilities during the pandemic.
The event has become infrastructure.
Later generations may therefore inherit:
- capabilities;
- rules;
- rituals;
- technologies;
- fears;
- institutions;
- debts;
- memories;
- blind spots;
- unfinished arguments.
They may not know which event created which part of the environment unless education reconstructs the lineage.
This is one reason history matters to education
History is not only a collection of important dates.
It teaches us that the present has parents.
A rule, institution or social expectation that appears natural today may have been created as a response to a specific problem in another period.
Understanding that lineage gives learners a more sophisticated question:
What problem was this designed to solve, and does that problem still exist in the same form?
That question protects against two opposite errors:
- discarding inherited systems without understanding why they exist;
- preserving inherited systems forever even after conditions have changed.
Sir Ken Robinson changed educational questions in a different way
Not every idea-changing force is a catastrophe.
A person can change public thinking by naming a problem differently.
Sir Ken Robinson repeatedly challenged education systems to reconsider assumptions about human ability, creativity, standardisation and the conditions under which learners flourish.
He did not need to change the physical world in order to change the question. He changed the conceptual frame through which people looked at schooling.
Instead of:
How do we make more students fit the system?
his work invites:
What educational conditions allow different human capacities to develop while preserving meaningful standards?
That is another route by which people change ideas: they help us see the old problem under a new description.
The learner’s job is not to remain unchanged
Children are sometimes praised for holding firm opinions. Adults too can treat changing one’s mind as weakness.
But an idea that cannot be changed by relevant evidence is not strong. It is sealed.
Education should instead cultivate a more demanding form of stability:
- do not change merely because somebody is louder;
- do not change merely because an event is frightening;
- do not refuse to change because the idea is yours;
- change when better evidence, a better explanation or a changed world genuinely requires revision.
Maturity is not having ideas that never change. It is knowing what kind of evidence should be allowed to change them.
For students: ask what changed—the world, the evidence or your interpretation?
When a new event forces you to reconsider something, separate three possibilities.
- The world changed. Conditions are genuinely different now.
- New evidence appeared. The world may be the same, but you know more about it.
- Your interpretation changed. The evidence may have been available before, but you now understand it differently.
Those are not the same intellectual movement.
For parents: a person can change a child’s idea of themselves
One of the most important idea systems a child possesses is the model they build of themselves.
“I am clever.”
“I am slow.”
“I am not creative.”
“Science is not for me.”
These ideas may emerge from marks, comparisons, comments, repeated experiences and the expectations of adults.
A parent or teacher should therefore be careful: a casual judgement from an important adult can become part of the child’s evidence about who they are.
The better intervention is often specific:
You are finding this particular kind of transfer difficult right now. Let us find out why.
That keeps the problem correctable.
For teachers: events are evidence, not verdicts
A failed test, a brilliant performance, an argument in class, a sudden loss of confidence or an unexpected breakthrough can all change what a teacher thinks about a student.
But one event should not automatically become the learner’s identity.
Ask:
- Is this a pattern or an exception?
- What conditions produced it?
- What happened immediately before?
- What would I expect to see if my explanation were correct?
- What evidence would make me revise the explanation?
This is the small-scale classroom version of the same discipline required when societies interpret historical events.
From question to history to independent thought

The deeper lesson
We are changed by people.
We are changed by events.
We are changed by what those events reveal, by what people teach us about them, by what institutions preserve from them and by the consequences that arrive years later.
But education should give us something more than susceptibility to influence.
It should give us the ability to distinguish:
- event from interpretation;
- evidence from authority;
- loss from later learning;
- correlation from cause;
- immediate response from descendant consequence;
- shared event from unequal human receipt;
- necessary revision from fashionable reaction.
Then an event can change our ideas without erasing our judgement.
A person can change our ideas without replacing our responsibility to think.
And when the next event arrives—as eventually some event always does—we do not begin from zero. We begin with inherited knowledge, inherited institutions, inherited mistakes, inherited capabilities and the questions previous generations learned to ask.
The world changes us. Education teaches us how to change without losing the ability to tell why.
