What Should Schools Standardise—and What Should Be Allowed to Vary?

Quick answer: Schools should standardise what must be common for safety, fairness, continuity and qualification meaning. They should allow variation where learners differ in prior knowledge, pace, support needs, interests and routes to mastery. The goal is not maximum standardisation or maximum personalisation. It is to place the boundary intelligently.

Common standards can perform important social work.

Without some standardisation, students may receive radically different opportunities under the same label.

The destination can remain common while the route differs.

The school remains shared. The timetable remains coordinated. The student does not need to be treated as one single academic level across every subject.

  1. Does this element need to be common for safety, fairness or meaning?
  2. Would variation improve learning without undermining those functions?
  3. Can teachers and institutions realistically support the variation?
  4. Will the learner still understand the standard being pursued?

If the answer to the first question is weak and the educational benefit of flexibility is strong, unnecessary standardisation deserves scrutiny.

For parents

Ask whether your child needs a different standard or simply a different route to the same standard. Often the latter is the better starting point.

For teachers

Protect what must remain common. Adapt where student evidence shows that one route is not serving all learners equally well.

For students

Do not confuse receiving different support with receiving a lesser goal. Different routes can still lead to demanding common standards.
