Where Can Singapore Students Check UCAS Choice Substitution Rules?

Use the official UCAS application-change guidance if you want to replace a university or course choice after submitting. UCAS says a choice can normally be substituted within 14 days of the date on the welcome email, and each choice can be substituted only once.

Check the replacement course before pressing the button. UCAS also says substitutions cannot be made after 30 June, and a replacement submitted after that course’s relevant deadline will be treated as late. Contact the new university first if its deadline has passed and ask whether it would still consider the application.

Did you know substitution is not an undo button? When a choice is replaced, the original university or college stops considering the application, and UCAS warns that the applicant cannot simply swap back later. Withdrawing a choice, declining a place and using UCAS Extra follow different rules.

What to check before substituting a choice

Start from the welcome-email date

The 14-day period begins from the date of the UCAS welcome email, not the day the applicant first started the form. Open the submitted application and confirm the available action against the official guidance. If the window has closed, do not assume a university can be replaced through an informal message.

Confirm the replacement is a real fit

Read the new course page, entry requirements, subject conditions, location, fees and start details. A course appearing in search does not guarantee that a late applicant will be considered or offered a place. If timing is close or the relevant deadline has passed, contact the provider before removing the original choice.

Understand what the click ends

UCAS states that the original provider will no longer consider the application after substitution. Save the course details you checked, verify the new course code and institution, and pause before confirming. Each choice can be substituted only once, so a typing mistake or rushed decision may not be reversible through the same route.

Keep other post-application routes separate

A withdrawal removes a choice without replacing it through the 14-day substitution route. UCAS Extra is for eligible applicants who used all five choices and hold no offers, during the published Extra period. Declining a firm place is another later-stage action with consequences for offers. Use the official page matching the applicant’s present status.

Your next action

Open the UCAS welcome email and write down its date. Then compare the original and replacement courses side by side, check the new course deadline, contact the provider if the application would be late, and use the substitution control only after confirming the course code and understanding that the original choice will end.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
