Use College Board’s Withhold Scores and Cancel Scores pages before changing what a US university or scholarship recipient will receive. Withholding hides a selected AP score from a particular recipient’s report; cancellation permanently removes that score from College Board’s records. They are not interchangeable, and neither action guarantees an admissions outcome.
If you want to keep the score but prevent one institution from receiving it in a paid report, first check withholding eligibility and the AP Student Score Reporting portal. If you want a score permanently removed, read the cancellation instructions and downloadable form. Verify the original exam year and intended recipient before choosing either procedure.
Did you know? College Board says that an AP report normally includes the student’s complete score history, and the free annual score send cannot be customised by withholding a particular score. A cancellation deadline for preventing the free report from including a score is not the same as a university application deadline.

What should I check before acting?
Choose whether you need to hide or delete
Withholding retains the result with College Board but removes it from the reports sent to selected recipients. The withhold can be lifted later, but lifting it does not automatically resend an earlier report. Check the current portal steps and any associated charges before placing the send.
Cancellation is permanent and cannot be reversed. College Board also states that archived AP results cannot be canceled. Discuss the practical consequences with your school’s counsellor if you are uncertain; do not make an irreversible request merely because a result is lower than you hoped.
Identify the recipient and the type of score send
The regular AP report includes current and previous AP exam scores. For a paid report, College Board’s portal provides score-withholding options; for the annually selected free recipient, withholding is not available. Make sure you are looking at the right college and reporting route.
Some institutions ask for AP scores after admission to consider credit or placement rather than to decide admission. A school may still request applicants to self-report scores in a separate application field. A College Board reporting change does not edit answers already submitted through a university application.
Read exam-year instructions before relying on a date
The AP cancellation page explains that a request must reach College Board by 15 June in the exam year to prevent that year’s score going to the free recipient. The action itself may be available beyond that deadline, but it cannot necessarily undo a report already received.
Withholding begins after the exam administration’s results are released. For both services, read the current exam-year page instead of reusing a screenshot or fee from a previous cohort. Leave time for the requested service to be processed before a receiving institution’s own deadline.
Check university policy before making a change
A university determines whether AP scores are used for admission, advanced placement or credit. An AP score of a particular number does not guarantee credit, nor does choosing to withhold a result ensure it will have no bearing on a separate application that has already been submitted.
For the ordinary sending route, see eduKate’s official AP score-sending guide. The wider US university application pathway explains how application, testing and university decisions remain separate.
What should I do next?
Write down the AP exam year, the score, the institution and your actual goal. Then compare the two College Board instructions. If you want a recipient-specific block, use the score-reporting portal; if you need permanent cancellation, follow College Board’s official cancellation form and deadline details.
Keep the confirmation and verify directly with your college whether a score report has been received or processed. Continue through Singapore School Pathways & Calendar for the larger overseas-study route; don’t treat a reporting decision as an admissions decision.
