Where Can Singapore Students Check the UK Immigration Health Surcharge?

Start with the GOV.UK Immigration Health Surcharge guide. Its pages explain who usually pays the IHS, how the amount is calculated, when payment occurs in the visa application and which refund situations are covered.

Use the guide’s current cost page rather than copying a fee from an older university article. The amount depends on the immigration route and length of permission, and the online application calculates the payment required for the case.

Did you know paying the IHS is not the same as receiving a visa, and it does not make every health service free? Keep the IHS payment reference with the visa record, check the published NHS scope, and treat visa fees, tuition, living funds and private insurance as separate questions.

What should I check before paying the IHS?

Start with the correct immigration route

The IHS test follows the visa or immigration application, not simply the fact that someone is a student. Use the Student visa page and the “who needs to pay” page to check whether the application is made from outside or inside the UK, how long permission is requested and whether an exemption applies.

A university’s admissions team can explain its process, but GOV.UK owns the immigration rule. Use our UK CAS guide to keep the sponsor’s course record separate from the government’s health-surcharge calculation.

Check dates before trusting the total

The online calculation can use the immigration permission period rather than tuition alone. Compare the CAS course dates with the visa application and read GOV.UK’s treatment of six-month portions and applications made inside or outside the UK.

Do not promise a household total by multiplying an old annual figure. Each applicant or dependant may create a separate charge, and current amounts can change. Save the calculation and payment confirmation produced by the official application.

Understand what payment does—and does not—cover

The GOV.UK overview says eligible access to the NHS begins from the visa start date once the required surcharge has been paid. It also notes that some services can still carry charges, including prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests.

Private medical insurance does not normally remove an IHS liability where the official rules say it is due. Conversely, paying the surcharge does not settle the visa decision, tuition account or financial-evidence requirement. Keep those checks in separate folders.

Read refund rules from the source

The refunds page distinguishes full refunds, partial refunds and situations with no refund. A refusal, withdrawal before decision, duplicate payment or a shorter grant can be treated differently, and the recipient of the refund may be the person whose card made the payment.

If the application changes, use the live refund page before contacting a bank or university. Keep the IHS reference, application number, decision notice and card record so the payment can be matched to the correct application.

What is the next useful step?

Open the GOV.UK IHS guide from the same session as the visa application and record the current instructions. Our overseas student-visa source guide covers the wider admission–immigration distinction; this page only routes the surcharge check.

For the broader university route, continue to UCAS applications from Singapore, then return to GOV.UK and the licensed sponsor for current, case-specific steps.
