Did you know? Students applying to New Zealand from Singapore should begin with Immigration New Zealand’s official Student Fund Requirements page. It separates living costs, course fees and the money needed for travel out of New Zealand. These are not one interchangeable bank balance.
The required living-cost evidence depends on the student’s study level and duration. As reviewed in October 2026, the official guidance lists NZD 20,000 per year for tertiary or other non-compulsory study and NZD 17,000 for a year of primary or secondary school. For shorter studies the monthly approach differs. Verify the current figures for the intended visa application rather than guessing from a university brochure.
Next, open the Fee Paying Student Visa page to check the relevant visa route and documents. A student can rely on eligible savings, a sponsor or an acceptable financial undertaking, but each has different rules. An educational offer does not itself prove that the applicant can meet immigration costs.

How to check without mixing up funding categories
Separate course fees, living costs and onward travel
The Fee Paying Student Visa asks for an offer of place from an approved education provider. It also requires appropriate fee evidence, money to support the stay and arrangements for departure. Even where tuition has been prepaid, living costs and outward travel must be considered separately.
The official student-funds page distinguishes school pupils from tertiary students and explains when prepaid accommodation may reduce the living-cost evidence needed. Do not assume a homestay deposit covers every living expense or that a course offer is a fee-payment receipt.
Bank statements must explain genuinely available money
Immigration New Zealand may accept bank statements showing the account holder and a recent transaction history, fixed-term deposit evidence, a scholarship award or other specified documents. It may ask where significant recent deposits came from. This is a credibility check, not simply a demand to display a large closing balance.
If a relative has moved funds shortly before the application, keep legitimate records of the transfer and source. Use the official evidence requirements rather than guessing what a screenshot or agent receipt can prove. The funds must genuinely be available for study-related costs.
A sponsor and an overseas guarantor are different
The official guidance describes eligible New Zealand sponsors and separate financial undertakings by a person or organisation outside New Zealand. A family member living in Singapore should not automatically select the New Zealand sponsor route merely because they will help with expenses. Check the applicable guarantor form and proof of the relationship.
An eligible New Zealand sponsor may have to provide a sharing ID and financial documents. An overseas guarantor uses the financial-undertaking procedure with evidence of funds. Ask Immigration New Zealand which mechanism applies if your family’s status crosses several countries.
Understand tuition approval in principle
The Fee Paying Student Visa page explains that eligible applicants outside New Zealand may apply before paying their tuition fees in full and use an approval-in-principle stage. This does not create an automatic visa or remove the later fee-payment evidence requirement.
Do not pay a school or agent solely because a generic guide says tuition must always be prepaid. Follow the current immigration route and the actual education provider’s terms for your circumstances.
Check restrictions on special transfer arrangements
New Zealand’s Funds Transfer Scheme is described for certain named countries, including China, India and several others. It is not a general requirement for every applicant residing in Singapore. Do not assume a foreign-currency transfer account is part of your visa application unless Immigration New Zealand instructs it for your case.
A grant of admission or a scholarship does not by itself settle genuine study intentions or immigration approval. Keep the university’s acceptance, provider fee receipt, living-cost evidence and visa application status as different records.

Your next step
Choose the exact New Zealand course, its duration and the correct visa route. Use the government fund-requirements page to determine the relevant cost categories, then identify whether you will rely on personal savings, a scholarship, a qualifying sponsor or a guarantor and prepare the matching documents.
