Start with Study with New Zealand’s official study-planning guide, then open the university’s own admissions pages. For an example of the institution-level route, the University of Auckland international application page links to its application guidance and closing dates.
Confirm the degree, campus, entry year and applicant category before collecting documents. Read the university’s guidance for your actual qualification and the programme’s subject requirements. If you have prior tertiary study, ask which admission route applies rather than automatically using a school-leaver checklist.
Did you know general university entry, programme entry and language requirements may need separate checks? Auckland’s overseas secondary-school applicant page identifies those checks for its own applicants. Use the corresponding official pages at your chosen institution; one university’s conditions do not establish another’s.

Practical checks before you act
Begin with the programme’s curriculum. Write down the foundation subjects and any specialisation or practical component you want to understand better. This makes it easier to ask meaningful questions about what you would actually study.
Next, check your qualification route. Keep the original names of your qualification and subjects in your notes. If a university’s page is unclear about your case, send a precise enquiry naming the programme, intake and qualification instead of asking only whether you can get in.
Organise documents by source and purpose. Your own identity records, official academic records and any requested additional materials may need different handling. Follow the university’s requirements for certification, translation or direct submission where applicable.
Read any offer carefully. Record conditions that remain outstanding, how they must be satisfied and the stated deadlines. Do not treat a conditional offer as proof that every requirement has already been met.
Plan the transition realistically. Compare the start date with your examination timetable and other commitments, and investigate accommodation and costs through current provider information. Mark unanswered questions before committing to arrangements.
Your next step
Open the chosen university’s admissions guide and one programme page together. Confirm the entry year, qualification route, requirements and application method, then ask the admissions team about anything unresolved.
For immigration preparation, follow the links in the official New Zealand study guide to the current government instructions. Our overseas student-visa guide helps identify that separate task. You can also compare the Australian application source guide while keeping each country’s requirements distinct.
