Did you know? Not every Canadian study-permit applicant needs an immigration medical examination (IME), but living in Singapore may make one necessary for longer stays. Start with IRCC’s medical-exam rules for students and its country-and-territory checker, rather than booking an ordinary health screening.
The current IRCC country list marks Singapore “yes”. A student planning to stay in Canada for more than six months who has lived in Singapore for six or more consecutive months in the year before arriving may therefore need an IME. The assessment depends on travel and residence history, not only nationality. Certain healthcare, childcare or other public-health-sensitive activities can trigger medical requirements separately.
If an IME applies, follow IRCC’s instructions and book with an approved panel physician, not simply your family doctor. The physician performs the examination but IRCC makes the immigration decision. Check whether the application uses an upfront IME or an examination requested after submission, and keep the official confirmation documents.

How to check your own circumstances accurately
Look at the past year’s travel, not only the passport
IRCC’s rule for stays longer than six months considers whether you have lived or travelled in a designated country for at least six consecutive months in the preceding year. Singapore is listed as requiring an IME under that condition. But a Singapore-based applicant who has recently lived elsewhere, or someone with a different travel pattern, should apply the actual IRCC checker rather than treating a Singapore passport as the whole answer.
Record intended length of stay, countries lived in and the approximate dates. If the case is ambiguous, ask IRCC through its official guidance rather than filling a declaration with a guessed residence history.
Check programme activities that may protect public health
Certain activities can require an IME even when the six-month country condition would not apply. IRCC highlights work in healthcare, childcare and other settings involving public health, including some medical students. A university programme’s title alone may not describe all required placements; check the course and any planned work restrictions.
The university determines academic and placement eligibility. IRCC determines whether immigration medical clearance is required. Neither should be treated as the other’s approval.
Use a recognised panel physician
IRCC states that your regular doctor cannot conduct its immigration medical exam unless that doctor is on the panel-physician list. Follow the official link from the medical-exam page to find a current physician and confirm the appointment process before paying. Clinics have their own costs; do not rely on a price from an unrelated visa agent.
IRCC lists acceptable identity documents and explains what to bring, including relevant medical records and the form issued after submission if applicable. Keep private health information with the clinic and the official immigration application rather than sharing it through unofficial websites.
Know which confirmation goes with the application
An upfront medical exam has a document that IRCC says applicants should include with the permit application. If IRCC asks for the IME later, the physician generally sends the medical results directly and no extra self-upload may be needed. Follow the instruction for your actual stage rather than sending a duplicate report.
IRCC says IME results are normally valid for 12 months. A completed examination does not guarantee a permit, and medical validity can expire before a planned arrival. Keep examination timing alongside your intended intake.
Biometrics and the study permit are separate
A medical exam does not replace biometrics, admission to a designated learning institution, financial evidence or immigration approval. If you need fingerprint or photo instructions, use the existing Canada biometrics source guide. For finance, see the Canada proof-of-funds guide.

Your next step
Check your intended Canadian course duration and the IRCC country list, including your actual previous-year residence history. If an IME is required, use the official panel-physician instructions and follow the permitted timing for your study-permit application.
