Where Can Singapore Students Find MEXT Scholarship Application Instructions?

Start with the Embassy of Japan in Singapore’s MEXT undergraduate scholarship page or MEXT research-student scholarship page, depending on your intended study. Read the Study in Japan MEXT overview to distinguish scholarship categories and recommendation routes.

On 19 October 2026, both embassy pages displayed 2027 scholarship information and marked applications closed. They are useful for understanding the process, but are not invitations to submit a late application. Recheck the embassy’s current notice before using any year’s forms, document instructions or screening schedule.

Did you know? MEXT is not one application form for every student. Embassy recommendation and university recommendation are different routes, and not every university has a recommendation quota. First identify the category, year and recommending organisation; then assemble the documents that route actually requests.

How do I choose the right MEXT instructions?

Treat the national overview as the map and the relevant current application guidelines as the detailed route. Keep the embassy’s local notes beside them rather than reading either source in isolation.

Choose the category before comparing requirements

Study in Japan lists several MEXT categories, including undergraduate, research, teacher-training, Japanese-studies, college-of-technology and specialised-training-college routes. These labels describe different study situations, not interchangeable versions of the same award.

Write down what you hope to study and the qualification you currently hold. Check which category and fields are available through the relevant mission or university. Do not assume that every category in a national overview is being recruited locally in every cycle. Confirm which mission handles your nationality rather than assuming that studying in Singapore determines the application route.

Separate embassy and university recommendation

The national overview explains that embassy-recommendation candidates are recruited and initially screened by a Japanese diplomatic mission. For university recommendation, it tells applicants to check whether the intended university has a recommendation quota and to follow that university’s requirements.

An ordinary university enquiry is therefore not automatically a scholarship nomination. Ask the institution which recommendation scheme, if any, applies to your proposed study. Keep the answer with the exact programme and intake rather than assuming another university uses the same arrangement.

Read the local notes before preparing documents

The Singapore embassy’s 2027 notices contain local directions alongside links to the national guidelines. For example, the undergraduate notice specifies copy requirements and when the health certificate is requested; the research notice has its own document notes.

These differences are a good reason to build a fresh checklist from the relevant call. Record each required item, certification instruction, submission destination and deadline. If a local note and your reading of a guideline appear inconsistent, seek clarification before submitting an incomplete package.

Keep the application year and selection stages visible

The national 2027 research embassy-recommendation page warns applicants not to send documents directly to MEXT in Japan. It also explains that country-specific schedules differ. A national recruitment description should not replace the Singapore mission’s actual instructions.

Meeting the stated application conditions is not a scholarship award. Read the screening and later placement instructions for your route. For broader course research, our Japanese university application guide explains where to check the programme, teaching language and university’s own admission requirements.

What should I do next?

Choose one category and recommendation route, then save the current call and its linked guidelines together. If the next call is not yet available, use the previous cycle only to understand the process—not to predict a new deadline or reuse old forms.
