Check the receiving university’s official English-language and programme admissions pages, looking specifically for “MyBest” or “TOEFL superscores”. ETS’s Understanding TOEFL Scores page says institutions set their own requirements and applicants should confirm MyBest acceptance directly.
Did you know the presence of MyBest on a report does not itself establish a university’s acceptance policy? ETS’s score-report FAQs distinguish results from one test date from MyBest results using section scores across valid test dates. Identify which set of scores the university says it will consider.
Use a university’s instructions only for the admissions route they cover. For example, Stanford Graduate Admissions’ Test Scores page explicitly discusses MyBest, reporting and evaluation for its graduate route. That is an institutional example—not a rule for every university, every Stanford programme or undergraduate admission.
Find your next step
Find ETS and institutional sources · Check acceptance, dates and reporting · Ask the programme a precise question
Which official source answers your question?
| Your task | Official source | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the two score presentations | ETS: score-report FAQs | Single test date and MyBest results |
| Check current reporting and scales | ETS: Understanding TOEFL Scores | MyBest guidance and the January 2026 scale change |
| See an explicit institutional policy | Stanford Graduate Admissions—example | Scope, reporting instructions and programme requirements |
What should you establish before relying on MyBest?
Look for an explicit policy for your programme
Save the official admissions page with the degree level, programme and intended intake in your notes. A general statement that a university accepts TOEFL does not answer the more specific MyBest question. Search the relevant English-language page, then ask admissions if the wording is silent or ambiguous.
A useful enquiry is: “For this programme and intake, do you accept TOEFL iBT MyBest scores, or must the required results come from one test date?” Ask about any component requirements at the same time. Keep the reply with the application checklist rather than relying on a forum answer about another course.
Read the policy and the official report together
Keep the report’s single-date results separate from the MyBest section when checking the requirement. Do not create your own combined score in a spreadsheet and present it as the provider’s result. Use the score information actually issued by ETS.
The current ETS page also explains how the January 2026 score-scale change affects MyBest presentation on reports for older and newer test dates. If the university’s wording and your report use different formats, ask how it wants the evidence assessed instead of inventing a conversion.
Treat the Stanford example as a model of clear instructions
Stanford Graduate Admissions says it accepts MyBest and makes received TOEFL scores available to the admissions committee, which determines how to evaluate them. The page separately explains self-reporting and official reporting. Read the relevant instructions in full if this is your actual application route.
For another institution, find the equivalent source rather than copying Stanford’s procedure. Ask whether the published policy covers your degree and whether a programme sets additional requirements. Acceptance of a score format is one check; meeting the required score and the rest of the application conditions are separate checks.
Separate an upload from official delivery
Establish whether the application currently asks for self-reported scores, an uploaded document or an official report sent by ETS. Record the evidence deadline and the programme’s way of confirming receipt. Completing one kind of submission should not be assumed to satisfy a differently worded request.
If a portal shows an unresolved item, quote its exact wording when contacting admissions. Include the relevant test date and application reference through the institution’s official channel. Do not repeatedly order reports just because a status is unfamiliar; first establish what has and has not been received.
Your next step: record the policy before making a score plan
For one programme, write down whether MyBest is accepted, which scores and dates are required, and how evidence must be delivered. If any point remains unclear, ask the admissions team before using combined scores to decide whether your English requirement is met.
