Did you know? The exact English-language requirement comes from the university and course you are applying to, not from a single country-wide score. Open the official course page and international admissions guidance for your qualification and intended intake.
For UK study, UCAS’s English-language guidance explains that universities specify accepted tests, overall scores and component requirements. It also notes that some school qualifications can provide evidence where the university accepts them. Studying in Singapore does not by itself confirm an exemption for every overseas course.
Your immediate next step is to record the accepted test or qualification, required overall and section results, evidence deadline and any exemption conditions. For TOEFL, ETS’s destination search is a useful starting aid, but confirm the final policy with the university before booking or submitting scores.

Which source answers your question?
| Your question | Start here | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Find the exact course requirement | The university’s official course and international admissions pages | Applicant qualification, intake and English evidence accepted |
| Understand UK evidence routes | UCAS English-language guidance | Tests, component scores and accepted alternatives |
| Locate TOEFL institution information | ETS destination search | Use as a guide, then verify with the institution |
| Check TOEFL reporting questions | ETS score-report FAQs | Score submission and institution-specific acceptance questions |
Check the course as well as the university
A university may publish a general requirement and additional standards for particular programmes. Read both before choosing the evidence to submit.
Write the course title and intake beside every score requirement. If two pages appear inconsistent, ask admissions which instruction applies to your qualification and programme.
Ask about school-based evidence precisely
If hoping to use a school English result, identify the examination board, subject title, level, grade and year. Ask whether that exact qualification meets the university’s policy.
If the policy refers to prior English-medium education, check the required duration and proof. An assumption about the language of schooling is not the same as an accepted exemption.
Verify the test version and reporting policy
Before booking IELTS, TOEFL or another test, check which version the university accepts and any restrictions on score combinations or delivery mode. Use the provider for current registration logistics.
For TOEFL, ETS advises applicants to confirm institution-specific score requirements, including acceptance of MyBest scores. Keep the university’s instructions with the result-reporting details.
Plan around the evidence deadline
Record when the result must reach the university and whether the policy limits how old it can be. Allow time for the actual testing and reporting process without assuming immediate delivery.
Keep academic admission evidence and any immigration-related English requirement as separate checks with their responsible bodies. Completing one does not automatically answer the other.
