Start with LSAC’s LawHub Credential Assembly Service guide for US Juris Doctor applications, or the separate LLM Credential Assembly Service page for participating graduate law programmes. Singapore students should choose the degree route first: the JD and LLM instructions are not interchangeable.
Did you know CAS assembles and distributes application credentials rather than awarding a university place? Its role includes handling academic records and recommendations. The receiving law school still sets its admission requirements, decides which services it requires and makes the selection decision.
Before requesting records, open LSAC’s international transcript instructions and the intended law school’s current checklist. Confirm the service required, which institutions must supply documents, the delivery method and the deadline. A transcript saved on your laptop is not the same as a record delivered through the prescribed channel.

Which official source answers your question?
| Your task | Official source | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Choose the JD service | LawHub: Credential Assembly Service | CAS steps and the law school’s required services |
| Send non-US/Canadian academic records | LSAC: international transcripts | When the rule applies and who must send records |
| Apply for a participating graduate law programme | LSAC: LLM CAS | The separate LLM service and required components |
What should you settle before ordering records?
Write JD or LLM at the top of your checklist
The JD CAS guide describes a service used by most ABA-approved law schools and many other US law schools. It includes education history, transcript requests and recommendation handling. Do not assume that every law programme worldwide uses this process simply because its award contains the word “law”.
For an LLM or another participating graduate law degree, begin again at the LLM instructions. List each intended school and the service components it requests. Ask the school about any unclear requirement before purchasing a service or arranging another set of documents.
Check the international-record trigger
The JD international transcript page explains when CAS Authentication and Evaluation requires international records. It covers a bachelor’s degree earned outside the US, its territories or associated states, and Canada, and a separate condition concerning direct overseas enrolment totalling more than one year. Read the full conditions against your actual study history.
Make a simple study-history list: institution, country, dates, qualification and whether study was direct enrolment or part of another institution’s programme. If an exchange or unusual arrangement leaves you uncertain, give LSAC those facts rather than deciding that one transcript must cover everything.
Ask the issuer to follow LSAC’s delivery instructions
For the international records described on that page, LSAC requires documents sent directly by the issuing institution, with its specified secure-envelope arrangements. Student-sent documents are not accepted under those instructions. Original-language records are required, with a translation where they are not in English.
Send the registrar the precise official page and your identifying details. Ask what the institution can issue, how it will dispatch the record and how you can confirm dispatch. Do not substitute your own scan, grade conversion or certification by an unrelated person for the stated issuer requirements.
Track credentials separately from each application
The LLM CAS page distinguishes document assembly from international transcript authentication and evaluation, and says the latter is purchased with the Document Assembly Service. Check the selected school’s requirements rather than treating every available component as automatically necessary.
Keep two completion checks: whether LSAC has the required credentials, and whether the law school has the application it needs. Record outstanding references or records and resolve mismatched names promptly. A courier receipt proves dispatch, not that a complete admissions file has been accepted.
Your next step: make the document sender visible
Create one row per institution and receiving law school. Record the degree route, required service, issuing office, delivery channel and due date. Follow the correct CAS guide, then inspect the relevant account for missing items before treating the credential task as finished.
For the wider preparation method, use university application documents and official checklists. The Singapore school pathways collection connects earlier study decisions; the law school remains the authority for its own graduate admission route.
