Start with Immigration New Zealand’s Visas for studying in New Zealand hub. It compares the available study routes and links to the current eligibility, evidence and online-application instructions for each visa.
For many international students paying tuition fees, the relevant route is the Fee Paying Student Visa, but do not choose it from the name alone. Match the course length, study type, funding and applicant circumstances to the official visa finder before preparing documents.
A university or school offer is not immigration approval. The education provider decides admission; Immigration New Zealand decides the visa. Check both processes, and do not book around an assumed outcome or copy another student’s document list.

Select the visa before building the checklist
Immigration New Zealand lists several student visas, including fee-paying, English-language, pathway, exchange and scholarship routes. It also explains that some other visas may permit limited study. The correct route depends on the main purpose and duration of study, not simply on the applicant being a student.
Use the live visa page for your selected route. It is the authoritative checklist for eligibility, permitted study, work conditions and supporting evidence.
Separate the offer of place from the visa decision
A student normally needs an offer of place from an approved education provider for the relevant student-visa route. The offer identifies the course, dates and study arrangement, while the visa application separately tests immigration requirements. A conditional offer may be usable in some circumstances, but approval in principle is not the same as a final visa.

Build evidence around the official categories
The current Fee Paying Student Visa page groups evidence around identity, offer and tuition, living funds or sponsorship, outward travel, insurance, health, character and genuine study intentions. Age, previous travel and length of stay can change what is requested. Documents not in English may also need translations that meet Immigration New Zealand’s rules. For the narrower evidence question, use the related New Zealand student-visa funds and sponsorship guide.
Use your own facts. A sibling’s approval does not prove that the same medical, police, funding or guardian evidence applies to you. Upload clear documents and answer identity details exactly as shown in the passport.
Check timing, fees and conditions on the day
Fees and processing times can change, and wait times vary by provider type and application volume. Immigration New Zealand’s current guidance encourages offshore students to apply early and provides a live wait-time page. Use the official fee-and-location tool rather than a figure copied from a forum or older checklist.
Work rights, travel and course conditions appear on the granted visa. Even when a route can include work rights, the actual conditions control what the student may do. For the wider overseas-study sequence, use eduKate’s overseas student-visa source guide.
What should you do next?
Confirm the course and provider, choose the visa in Immigration New Zealand’s study-visa hub, then open that visa’s live evidence checklist. Compare the offer details with the application, verify passport validity, funds, insurance and any health or character evidence, and check current fees and wait times before submitting online.
