Where Can Singapore Students Register for Cambridge International IGCSE as Private Candidates?

Did you know? Students in Singapore can take Cambridge International IGCSE examinations as private candidates, but they cannot register directly with Cambridge International. Start with Cambridge’s official private-candidate registration guide and find a registered school or approved exam provider willing to enter you.

Next, use Cambridge’s Find a School service and check whether a centre accepts private candidates. Contact that centre about your subject code, examination series, available components, fees and deadline. Being listed as a Cambridge school does not necessarily mean it is currently taking private entries.

Before paying, open the exact syllabus in Cambridge’s IGCSE subject directory. Some syllabuses and options are unavailable to private candidates, particularly where coursework cannot be authenticated. This is also different from registering for a Singapore SEAB national examination as a private candidate.

What families need to verify

A Cambridge school is not automatically an exam venue for you

Cambridge’s search tool identifies registered schools and may indicate whether they accept private candidates. Contact the school or provider directly: a centre may not offer the examination series, subject or sitting you need. The approved-exam-centre list is another valid route, but it is not a complete list of every Cambridge school that can enter candidates.

Ask for the centre’s Cambridge number, its own private-candidate policy and confirmation that it can make the entry. A tutoring or online-learning company advertising Cambridge courses is not automatically authorised to enter you for an exam.

Check the precise assessment components

Not every IGCSE subject can be taken privately in every option. Cambridge’s official help guidance says the individual syllabus document contains private-candidate availability in its “Before you start” section. This is essential where coursework, speaking, practical or internally assessed material forms part of the route.

Do not infer a paper option from another centre’s advertisement. Give your centre the subject name and exact syllabus code, then request written confirmation of the series and option it will enter. Ask how any special arrangements are handled before accepting the place.

Fees and deadlines belong to the entering centre

Cambridge bills centres for entries; the school or provider may charge you for examination administration, supervision or other agreed services. Cambridge does not publish one universal Singapore private-candidate price. Request an itemised quote and the centre’s deadline, including its policy for late changes or withdrawals.

Once the entry is confirmed, the centre should give you your statement of entry and the relevant examination timetable. Check the spelling of your name, syllabus codes and examination location. The private-candidate responsibilities page also directs students to take identity documents to each examination.

Results, access arrangements and reviews go through the centre

For access arrangements, special consideration, examination results, certificates and reviews of marking, the centre is the official operational contact. Cambridge explicitly directs private candidates to their entering centre for these tasks. Do not assume a private tutor or a different registered school can make a request on your behalf.

If you are sitting more than one examination series, keep each centre’s confirmation separately. This avoids mismatched dates or a mistaken assumption that a previous entry automatically carries over.

Do not confuse Cambridge IGCSE with a national SEC or GCE route

Cambridge International IGCSE syllabuses are not automatically equivalent to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE or SEC examination registrations. If you need Singapore national examination eligibility or a specific subject for Singapore progression, use SEAB and the receiving institution’s rules rather than this international registration process.

For the Singapore route, read the SEAB private-candidate guide. This article owns the narrower Cambridge International registration question.
