Where Can NUS Students Find Science UROPS Registration Information?

For the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS), start with the NUS Faculty of Science UROPS overview and UROPS Registration and Timeline page. Use the former for course-level rules and the latter for finding a supervisor and completing registration.

Check prerequisites, the intended semester, project duration and the correct course code before committing. NUS requires students to confirm the project with their supervisor and ensure the required supervisor forms are completed before online project registration. A promising conversation alone is not finished registration.

Did you know? A UROPS project can be academically worthwhile without counting towards the particular major requirement you have in mind. The major and specialisation rules distinguish cohorts and disciplines, so verify credit treatment separately from project acceptance.

Practical checks before you act

Find the right supervisor before the form

Use the available-project and enquiry links on the registration page, rather than assuming a public search result is a live vacancy. Check the published department and co-supervision instructions. Keep your enquiry about one identifiable area of work so the recipient can understand what you are seeking.

Prepare a concise enquiry that identifies your major, stage of study, research interest and relevant preparation. Refer to a specific project or research area and explain what you hope to learn. This is a practical way to start a discussion, not a prescribed email template or assurance that a supervisor will have space.

Match the academic level and time commitment

The overview separates Level-2000 and Level-3000 routes and one-semester and two-semester projects. Check the applicable study-completion, GPA and prerequisite rules directly. Eligibility to enquire and acceptance onto a particular project are different questions.

Make a weekly plan that includes reading, research work, meetings, recording results and writing, alongside your other courses. Ask the prospective supervisor what the project will actually demand. A project title cannot tell you whether the practical schedule fits your semester, especially when laboratory sessions or sustained data work are involved.

Check the code against your degree plan

The degree-applicability page has separate cohort sections and discipline-specific conditions. Do not assume that any science research code can fill any science major requirement. Confirm the exact code and intended requirement with the department before registration.

Write the answer as a complete sentence in your planning notes: this course code, for this cohort, counts towards this named requirement, subject to these conditions. If any part is unresolved, ask the faculty rather than treating an available slot in your timetable as proof of academic credit. The existing degree-progress guide below explains the wider audit check.

Follow the project-registration sequence

Read the timeline by semester and academic year. Mark the discussion and registration checkpoints that apply to you. As a practical safeguard, keep those entries beside your other course-planning dates, with a reminder before each deadline rather than one reminder on the final day.

After allocation, follow the notification email’s registration instructions and retain confirmation. Check that the saved course details match what you agreed with the supervisor. If something is wrong, raise it promptly: the published instructions say the project level cannot be changed after online registration. Use the official UROPS enquiry route for unresolved administration.

Your next step

Choose a research area and discuss it with an appropriate supervisor. Before submitting, write down the agreed code, duration and degree treatment, then compare those notes with the official requirements. Keep unresolved questions visible until the department answers them; a tidy plan should record uncertainty, not conceal it.

Explore the connected learning guides

Choose the question that brought you here. Open one useful guide, try a small task, and stop when you have what you need.

Take one question further

The same learning habit can travel across subjects, while each subject keeps its own methods. These routes help you notice a difficulty, understand one part of it, and return to something you can do.

A word is familiar, but using it is difficult.

Move from recognising a word to retrieving it in a new context. Understand vocabulary plateaus.

Try it without the guide: Choose one word you already know. Close the guide and use it in a new sentence. Explain why it fits; try another context tomorrow.

A piece of writing has ideas, but the reader loses the thread.

Make the order of events and the links between sentences clear. Explore composition writing.

Try it without the guide: Choose one short paragraph. Read the relevant explanation, close it, and revise the paragraph. Ask someone to tell you what happened and why.

The Mathematics seems familiar, but marks still disappear.

Find the first point where the working stops being reliable. Find Secondary 4 A-Math mark leakage.

Try it without the guide: For a Secondary 4 A-Math question you have attempted, locate the first uncertain line. Repair that step, then try a comparable question without the worked answer.

A Science fact is remembered, but the explanation is incomplete.

Connect the evidence to a scientific idea and the resulting change. Follow the Primary Science learning route.

Try it without the guide: Choose a familiar Primary Science example. Explain the evidence, the idea and the result without notes. Then change one condition and explain your prediction.

Two accounts of the world seem to disagree.

Check the question, source, date and evidence before combining claims. Explore the World Knowledge research library.

Try it without the guide: Take one claim. Find the source best placed to support it, note its date, and state what remains uncertain. Return to your original question.

There is plenty of help, but independence is hard to see.

Check what the learner can understand and do after support is removed. Understand how education works.

Try it without the guide: Choose one small task the child has practised. Agree on a calm, brief attempt without prompts. Use what happens to choose one next step, then stop.
