Start with the financial-aid page of the university you are applying to, not a general scholarship list. For the three universities most often compared by families, use the official NUS financial-aid application page, NTU bursaries and application page, and SMU financial-aid page.
Apply through the university’s named portal and for the correct academic year. Admission, scholarships and need-based financial aid are separate decisions: submitting an undergraduate application does not automatically complete the financial-aid application, and eligibility for one scheme does not guarantee an award.
Check four things immediately: applicant category, full-time or part-time status, whether subsidised tuition or the MOE Tuition Grant is required, and the supporting-document deadline. Then confirm whether one university application covers several bursaries or whether a separate loan, PSEA or externally administered application is still needed.

Which financial-aid source should I use?
| Use this source | Check this first |
|---|---|
| NUS financial-aid application | Applicant portal, AY-specific instructions, documents, status and later scheme steps |
| NTU bursaries | Who should apply, current application period, supporting documents and portal |
| SMU financial aid | Current eligibility, student portal route and application exercise |
| eduKate NUS–NTU–SMU admissions guide | The wider admission route before or beside the aid application |
Financial aid is not the same as a scholarship
Need-based bursaries and aid assess financial circumstances. Scholarships usually focus on published merit or talent criteria and may have different terms. Loans must be repaid under their own conditions. The university scholarships source guide helps with award discovery, while this guide routes the financial-aid application itself.
The MOE Tuition Grant is another separate layer that reduces subsidised tuition for eligible students and may carry conditions for some recipients. Read the Tuition Grant source guide before assuming a university bursary, loan or grant replaces that decision.
What does “one application” cover?
A university may use one financial-aid application to assess a student for several institution-administered bursaries. That does not necessarily include every loan, government scheme, PSEA withdrawal or external award. The official page may direct successful or eligible students to a second portal or later agreement step.
Did you know the timing can also differ from admission? Some universities accept aid applications after the admission application is filed, while current students may follow a separate annual exercise. Always match the page to the academic year of matriculation, not the calendar year when the admission offer first arrived.
What documents and details should we prepare?
- University application or student identifier for the correct portal.
- Citizenship, residency and tuition-fee category.
- Household members and the income documents named by the university.
- Declarations or explanations required when income is irregular.
- Submission confirmation and any request for missing documents.
Use the university’s current checklist because document periods and acceptable evidence can change. Redact nothing unless the instructions allow it, and upload through the official portal rather than ordinary email unless the university specifically directs otherwise.
Apply, then watch the official channel
Submit the financial-aid application as early as the current page permits, upload every required document, and check the applicant or student portal plus the university email account. If additional information is requested, respond by the stated deadline. Compare the final package by separating non-repayable bursaries, repayable loans, fee offsets and living-cost support.
If the family plans to use education savings as well, check the PSEA source guide. PSEA use, financial aid and university admission can interact, but each has its own authority and action.
