What the map deliberately does not do

Freshness: structural truth versus current state

Geography, constitutional inheritance and long-lived infrastructure usually change slowly. Governments, wars, sanctions, election results, prices and transition arrangements can change quickly. Country articles therefore separate durable machinery from dated current-state claims wherever the distinction matters. For volatile states, read dates as part of the evidence rather than as decoration.

Why 195?

This sovereign-country register uses the 193 United Nations member states plus the two UN non-member observer states: the Holy See and the State of Palestine. Territories, associated states, autonomous regions, disputed polities and special administrative units require a status-aware layer rather than being silently forced into the sovereign-country count.

Why are some articles more complicated than others?

Because complexity is part of reality. Cyprus requires separate sovereignty and administration maps. Somalia requires federal, Somaliland and insurgent layers. Tuvalu requires statehood and physical habitability to be separated. Rigidly identical articles would create consistency by making the world less accurate.

Is a country self-contained?

Almost never. Countries share currencies, rivers, grids, security systems, labour markets, ports, air routes, migration networks, supply chains and ecosystems. The useful model is country system + shared systems + external dependencies.
