Quick Read: Primary 2 Vocabulary for Meaning and Use
This preserved eduKate weekly list is a learning resource, not an official MOE prescribed vocabulary list. For Primary 2 learners, the goal is not to rush through many words. It is to understand a manageable set, hear and read the words in context, retrieve them from memory, and use them correctly.

| crew | noun | a group of people who work together, especially on a ship or aircraft | The cabin crew prepared the plane for landing. |
| custom | noun | a traditional way of behaving or doing something | Giving red packets is a Lunar New Year custom. |
| decay | noun / verb | the process of becoming rotten or damaged; to rot or weaken | Fallen leaves decay over time. |
| deed | noun | an action, especially one that is good, bad or important | Helping the lost child was a kind deed. |
| digest | verb / noun | to break down food in the body; or a short summary of information | Your body digests food after you eat. |
| elegant | adjective | graceful, stylish and pleasing in appearance | She wore an elegant dress to the concert. |
| examine | verb | to look at something carefully | The doctor examined the injured ankle. |
| explore | verb | to travel through or investigate a place or idea | The children explored the nature trail. |
| fatal | adjective | causing death | The warning sign described the chemical as potentially fatal. |
| frail | adjective | weak or delicate | The frail branch snapped easily. |
| gasp | noun / verb | a sudden short breath, often from surprise or effort | She gasped when the lights suddenly went out. |
| gradual | adjective | happening slowly over time | There was a gradual change in the sky before sunset. |
| habit | noun | something a person does regularly | Reading before bed became a daily habit. |
| imitate | verb | to copy someone’s action, sound or behaviour | The child imitated the bird’s whistle. |
| inspire | verb | to make someone want to do or create something | The story inspired her to write her own adventure. |
| locate | verb | to find the position of something | We used the map to locate the museum. |
| loyal | adjective | faithful and supportive | The loyal dog waited by the gate every afternoon. |
| limb | noun | an arm or leg; or a large branch of a tree | The monkey swung from a tree limb. |
| limp | verb / noun / adjective | to walk unevenly because of pain; or lacking stiffness | He began to limp after twisting his ankle. |
| misery | noun | great unhappiness or suffering | The long delay caused misery for the tired travellers. |
| mystify | verb | to confuse or puzzle someone | The strange footprints mystified the hikers. |
| nursery | noun | a place where young children are cared for, or where young plants are grown | The garden centre has a nursery for young plants. |
| noble | adjective / noun | showing high moral qualities; or a person of high social rank in some societies | It was noble of her to protect the smaller child. |
| orchard | noun | an area where fruit trees are grown | We picked apples in the orchard. |
| ordeal | noun | a very difficult or unpleasant experience | Being lost in the storm was a frightening ordeal. |
| origin | noun | the place, time or cause from which something begins | The book explains the origin of the tradition. |
| pastime | noun | an activity done for enjoyment in free time | Drawing is one of her favourite pastimes. |
| predator | noun | an animal that hunts other animals for food | The eagle is a predator that hunts smaller animals. |
| privilege | noun | a special right, advantage or opportunity | It was a privilege to represent the school. |
| rate | noun / verb | a measure of speed, amount or frequency; or to judge the quality of something | The heart rate increased after the run. |
| rely | verb | to depend on someone or something | We rely on clean water every day. |
| remark | noun / verb | a comment; or to say something | Her funny remark made everyone laugh. |
| respect | noun / verb | admiration or consideration for someone or something; to treat with regard | We should respect other people’s belongings. |
| responsible | adjective | having a duty to take care of something or answer for an action | He is responsible for feeding the class fish. |
| revive | verb | to bring back to consciousness, strength or activity | Water helped revive the wilted plant. |
| scatter | verb | to spread or move in different directions | The pigeons scattered when the bicycle approached. |
| schedule | noun / verb | a plan showing when activities will happen; to arrange a time | The class checked the schedule for the excursion. |
| starve | verb | to suffer greatly from lack of food | Wild animals may starve if their food source disappears. |
| swift | adjective | fast or happening quickly | The lifeguard made a swift response. |
| talent | noun | a natural or developed ability to do something well | She has a talent for drawing animals. |
| volunteer | noun / verb | a person who offers to help without being forced; to offer to help | He volunteered to carry the books. |
| wise | adjective | showing good judgement and understanding | It was wise to bring water for the long walk. |
| wit | noun | the ability to use words in a clever and amusing way; mental sharpness | Her quick wit made the conversation lively. |
| weary | adjective | very tired, especially after effort or a long time | The weary hikers rested under a tree. |
Primary 2 Learning Routine
- Learn five to eight words at a time.
- Say the meaning without looking.
- Read one model sentence aloud.
- Create one new sentence of your own.
- Return to the same words after a few days and retrieve them again.
