Protocol 4 — Collocation Frame Repair

Use when the learner knows meaning but produces unnatural English. Store two or three frames, not a new definition.

  • draw/reach a conclusion;
  • corroborate an account;
  • pertinent to the question;
  • reluctant to admit;
  • allocate time to;
  • detrimental to.

Retest: prompt with the target word only and ask for a natural phrase before a full sentence.

Protocol 5 — Morphology Slot Repair

Use when the right concept is selected but the grammatical form is wrong. Give mixed sentence slots from several families so the learner cannot solve the task by suffix pattern alone.

  1. The report requires independent ______. → verification.

  3. The source is not independently ______. → verifiable may fit depending intended meaning.

Protocol 6 — Polysemy Sense Repair

Use when a familiar spelling triggers the wrong meaning automatically. Place two or three senses side by side and identify the clues that select each sense.

  • Low: context is too weak; avoid pretending certainty.

Retest: include one deliberately under-specified item where “not enough evidence for the exact meaning” is the best response.

Protocol 8 — Retrieval Under Interference

Use when the learner retrieves correctly from isolated flashcards but fails among neighbours. Mix semantically related words:

plausible · substantiated · conclusive · inconclusive · unsupported · warranted

Give conceptual clues in unpredictable order. Require the learner to name one rejected neighbour after answering.

Protocol 9 — Delayed Free Recall

Use when cue-dependent memory may be hiding weak ownership. The next day ask, “Which evidence-calibration words from yesterday can you reconstruct?” before giving any list. Then provide cues and compare free recall with cue-assisted recall.

A large gap between free and cued recall means the representations exist but self-generated access remains weak.

Protocol 10 — High-Confidence Contradiction

Use when a wrong rule is held confidently. Present a case the rule cannot explain.

Misconception: “Two websites agreeing means corroboration.”
Contradiction: both websites copied the same original press release. There is repetition, but no independent evidence.

Ask the pupil to state the corrected rule and predict a new case before moving on.

Protocol 11 — Misconception Inoculation

After repairing a misconception, deliberately show a tempting future trap:

  • salient detail that is not pertinent;
  • large sample that is still unrepresentative;
  • strong evidence that is not conclusive for the wider claim;
  • confident speech that is not arrogance;
  • harmful outcome that is not malicious.

The learner explains why the old wrong rule would fail again.

Protocol 12 — Overclaim Ladder

Give one evidence set and ask the learner to rank five claims from safest to strongest.

Evidence: one pupil rereads a warning twice and pauses before entering.
Possible claims: attentive → cautious → apprehensive → frightened → terrified.

Discuss which claims are compatible, which are warranted, and what additional evidence would justify an upgrade.

Protocol 13 — Selective Evidence Audit

Teach that selection is unavoidable but can be fair or misleading. Give ten data points/comments and ask pupils to create:

  1. a fair concise summary;
  2. a deliberately selective but technically truthful summary;
  3. an explanation of what was omitted and how the impression changed.

This repairs the misconception that misleading language must contain an outright false statement.

Protocol 14 — Response Compression Repair

Use when comprehension or oral answers become verbose. Mark each sentence as claim, evidence, explanation, repetition or irrelevant. Remove only repetition/irrelevance first.

Then compress further while preserving the task requirement and necessary qualification. The target is succinct, not merely short.

Protocol 15 — Register Re-Mapping

Use when one register dominates every task. Keep the proposition fixed but change audience:

  • friend;
  • teacher;
  • unfamiliar adult;
  • formal school message;
  • oral discussion;
  • narrative dialogue.

Ask what changed in diction, explicitness, politeness and sentence structure. Meaning should remain stable.

Protocol 16 — Oral Paraphrase Rescue

Use when oral fluency collapses while searching for a sophisticated word. Train rescue moves:

  • define the idea simply;
  • give an example;
  • use a broader accurate word;
  • continue the argument, then return if the exact word arrives.

“I can’t remember the exact word, but I mean that the solution can actually work with the staff and time available.” → the learner has preserved the concept of viable.

Fluency should not be sacrificed to vocabulary display.

Protocol 17 — Time-Pressure Ladder

Use only after untimed accuracy is secure:

  1. unlimited reasoning;
  2. one minute for three candidates;
  3. two minutes for ten mixed retrieval cues;
  4. 90 seconds for clue → inference → calibration;
  5. normal task conditions.

If the same semantic error reappears only under timing, speed is revealing—not causing—the weakly automated decision.

Protocol 18 — Error Recurrence Tracking

Track a repair across stages:

  • E1: first error;
  • R1: immediate correction;
  • D1: delayed retest;
  • I1: interference test with neighbours;
  • T1: changed-context transfer;
  • C1: normal constraint.

Do not retire the item after R1. The meaningful evidence is D1/T1/C1.

Repair: six minimal pairs varying only claim plausibility and speaker reaction. Require a one-sentence switch rule.

Delayed retest: unseen dialogue one week later. The repair succeeds only if the pupil selects accurately without being reminded of the pair.

Case 2 — 95% Recognition, Weak Composition

Observed: flashcard scores are high, but compositions contain phrases such as “a tremendously impeccable happiness” and “she articulated hello”.

Wrong diagnosis: the pupil needs more creative-writing vocabulary.

Correct diagnosis: productive-use and collocation failure, compounded by prestige over precision.

Repair: natural phrase frames, simple-word substitution, evidence-built vocabulary and deletion exercises where some “upgrades” must be rejected.

Delayed retest: unseen composition prompt with no required target words. Improvement appears when word choice becomes more natural even if fewer advanced words are used.

Case 3 — Accurate Untimed, Weak Timed

Observed: the pupil distinguishes pertinent/salient and substantiated/conclusive correctly during discussion but guesses under timed comprehension.

Wrong diagnosis: reteach all definitions.

Correct diagnosis: access speed and decision-load bottleneck.

Repair: preserve the same reasoning steps while reducing time gradually: 60 seconds → 40 → 30, then embed inside a short unseen passage.

Delayed retest: new semantic pairs at the same timing. Faster guessing does not count; accuracy must remain stable.

Case 4 — “My child writes too simply”

Observed: the pupil writes grammatical but generic language: went, looked, said, nice, bad.

Wrong diagnosis: require ten “wow words” per composition.

Correct diagnosis: productive precision gap.

Repair: select five high-transfer narrative networks—movement, attention, speech acts, emotion and consequence. Practise scene → candidate → Fence → sentence, then remove the word bank.

Delayed retest: unrelated composition prompt. Improvement means one or two precise natural words appear spontaneously where they add information.

Case 5 — Strong Oral Vocabulary, Weak Follow-Up

Observed: the pupil gives a polished opening answer but becomes hesitant when the examiner changes direction.

Wrong diagnosis: memorise more model oral responses.

Correct diagnosis: script dependence and weak flexible retrieval.

Repair: position → reason → example → qualification, plus unpredictable follow-up questions and paraphrase rescue.

Delayed retest: new stimulus where no prepared content transfers directly. This aligns with SEAB’s emphasis on effective communication rather than specialised vocabulary or pre-prepared responses.

Case 6 — Good Vocabulary, Overstated Comprehension

Observed: answers use sophisticated words but repeatedly jump from one clue to labels such as terrified, malicious, hypocritical.

Wrong diagnosis: praise advanced vocabulary and focus on grammar.

Correct diagnosis: calibration failure.

Repair: evidence ladders, alternative explanations and “what would make the stronger label fair?” prompts.

Delayed retest: passage deliberately containing suggestive but insufficient evidence. The pupil must choose a safer interpretation without prompting.

Case 7 — Vocabulary Keeps Disappearing

Observed: Friday quiz scores are good; two weeks later the words seem new again.

Wrong diagnosis: increase same-week repetition.

Correct diagnosis: retention and retrieval schedule failure.

Repair: reduce new-word intake, introduce next-day and 3–7-day cold retrieval, then interleave with older sets.

Observed: the pupil repeatedly says “two agreeing sources = corroboration” even after correction.

Wrong diagnosis: repeat the definition more loudly or more often.

What to Stop Doing Once a Weakness Is Stable

Retiring stable items matters because Primary 6 attention is limited. Practice should migrate towards unresolved weaknesses and actual language tasks.

The Final Repair Gate

  1. Can the learner explain the corrected rule without notes?
  2. Can the learner solve a new example?
  3. Can the learner reject the old tempting error?
  4. Can the learner retrieve the correction after several days?
  5. Can the learner handle plausible interference?
  6. Can the learner transfer to another topic or genre?
  7. Can the learner remain accurate under normal timing?
  8. Can the learner detect and repair the error independently?

A repair is complete when the old error stops recurring under changed conditions. Immediate understanding is the beginning of correction, not its endpoint.

Deep Repair Closing Principle

Primary 6 improvement becomes much more efficient when adults stop asking only, “How can we increase vocabulary?” and start asking, “Which language decision is failing, and what evidence would prove that it has been repaired?”

The strongest intervention is often smaller than expected: one corrected boundary, one natural collocation, one retrieval route, one evidence threshold or one self-checking rule. What makes it powerful is not its size but its durability. Repair it, remove support, wait, change the context and test again.
