300 useful Ukrainian vocabulary words and expressions for children, with 30 distinct entries for every age from 1 to 10. The full Ukrainian word lists come first. Every entry has an English meaning and a short Ukrainian example sentence, helping families use the language to communicate needs, feelings, comparisons and informed decisions.
The age groups are flexible guides, not developmental deadlines. A one-year-old does not need to say, read or write thirty words. Adults can model them naturally in responsive interaction, and an older Ukrainian beginner can use the simple words in age-appropriate games and reading. “Must know” means useful editorial choices, not the statistical top 300 words or an official school curriculum.
- Exactly 300 unique Ukrainian entries: 30 per age, ages 1–10.
- Original Ukrainian Cyrillic: English meanings and example sentences in Ukrainian.
- Communication first: needs, feelings, description, evidence, choices and reasoning.
- Language support: grammar notes, practical activities and reference dictionaries.

How to make Ukrainian vocabulary useful
Begin with a real communication need. At a meal, вода, чашка and допомога matter immediately. In a shared game, черга, чекати and ділитися help explain what should happen. Older learners checking a claim can use джерело, доказ and підтверджувати.
Choose a few useful words, model them in natural phrases and return to them later in new situations. A child may recognise the meaning before saying it, reading Ukrainian letters or spelling it correctly. A response in another language can show understanding. The eduKate Fencing Method can help structure meaning, contrast, a phrase, a sentence and later independent use; it is an editorial learning routine, not a formal Ukrainian developmental assessment.
Ukrainian language notes families should know
Ukrainian has its own alphabet and vocabulary. Ukrainian is a Slavic language written in Cyrillic, but it is not the same language as Russian. Ukrainian includes letters such as ґ, є, і and ї. Use Ukrainian-specific dictionaries, not word-for-word assumptions from another language.
Words change forms depending on grammatical role. The noun книжка changes to книжку as a direct object, for example in Читаю книжку. Adjectives can change for grammatical gender, number and case; verbs also change by person, time and aspect. The word column provides the citation form while the sentence demonstrates natural use.
Language changes over time. Ukrainian lexical resources vary in their historical coverage. The Potebnia Institute of Linguistics’ explanatory dictionary is an authoritative historical reference, while the Ukrainian Language and Information Fund supports contemporary academic dictionary projects. Different regions or households may choose other ordinary words; use the terms the learner actually hears.
Four weeks of practical word use
| Week | Practical task | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Choose a few meaningful words for a meal, game or story. | The learner understands the word in context. |
| 2 | Reuse those words in a different book, place or conversation. | The meaning carries beyond the first example. |
| 3 | Invite a real question, request, choice or short explanation. | The word serves an independent purpose. |
| 4 | Revisit uncertain meanings and compare one related pair. | The learner can apply a word in a new situation. |
The schedule is flexible and is not a promise that all 300 words can be mastered in a month. Choose meaning and relevance over memorising a quota.
Questions parents ask
Must a one-year-old know thirty Ukrainian words?
No. Adults may use these words around a child. The age sections are not speech, reading or writing milestones.
Are these the 300 most common Ukrainian words?
No. They are original practical editorial selections, not a corpus-frequency list.
Can a ten-year-old beginner use the age-one section?
Yes. Keep the important basic words and offer age-appropriate stories, games and real-world tasks.
Are Ukrainian and Russian interchangeable?
No. They are separate languages with different letters, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary choices.
Why does a word sometimes have a different ending in the example?
Ukrainian nouns, adjectives and verbs change form as part of normal grammar. Learn words in complete natural sentences.
Can children learn Ukrainian alongside other family languages?
Yes. Learning more than one language does not by itself cause a language delay. ASHA describes multilingual family support.
