Find the official SMU undergraduate Course Exemptions Calculator on SMU’s admissions website. Choose your actual pre-university qualification, then follow that branch’s instructions using your own results.
The calculator explicitly provides indicative exemptions only; SMU finalises exemptions after matriculation. Treat its output as a planning estimate, not an admission offer, confirmed credit record or guaranteed graduation timetable.
The starting page lists routes including Singapore-Cambridge A-Levels, IB, NUS High School Diploma and the five local polytechnics. It says other or international qualifications are assessed case by case after matriculation. Do not substitute a roughly similar qualification just to obtain a result.

Practical checks before you act
Use the right qualification and transcript
Begin with your official results beside the calculator. Check the awarding institution and qualification before entering grades. A course with a familiar name at another institution is not necessarily the same input, and a local polytechnic branch should not be used to represent an overseas diploma.
For a result not yet confirmed, keep a separate note of your assumption rather than quietly treating it as final. If you run an estimate for planning, label it with the date and inputs. This helps you avoid comparing two outputs that were generated from different information.
Read module names, codes and combinations
Did you know? The diploma branches can specify combinations rather than a single subject. The Singapore Polytechnic page includes paired-module requirements. The Temasek Polytechnic page asks for applicable subjects and warns that listed subjects may or may not lead to exemptions.
Use exact transcript entries, not a guess based on the word “mathematics” or “programming”. If a required combination includes two modules, do not assume one covers both. For a name change or missing module, note the discrepancy and ask SMU rather than choosing the closest-looking alternative.
Keep an estimate separate from a confirmed study plan
The calculator’s provisional status is the important boundary. Before deciding which courses to omit, use your confirmed university instructions and record. Keep a small checklist of questions about any estimated exemption: What requirement might it affect? Has it been finalised? What should I register for meanwhile?
Do not turn a possible exemption into a promised fee saving or earlier graduation date. Those are different planning questions requiring the relevant university rules and your actual programme plan. A calculator result by itself does not resolve every requirement, timetable dependency or personal commitment.
Check readiness as well as administration
An exemption question can also reveal a learning question. If you last studied a topic some time ago, try explaining its main idea or solving a representative problem from your own previous course. This suggested self-check does not decide formal eligibility; it helps you notice where revision would be useful.
For example, familiarity with a mathematics module title does not tell you whether you can still use the methods confidently. Keep “What has SMU formally recognised?” separate from “What do I need to refresh?” Both matter, but only the university decides the exemption.
What to do next
Open the official calculator, select your exact qualification and work from verified results. Save the estimate with its inputs, then follow SMU’s post-matriculation confirmation process before relying on exemptions in course planning.
