Start with your own polytechnic’s official student or academic-matters pages. Republic Polytechnic publishes a dedicated Course Deferment and Withdrawal guide, while Singapore Polytechnic places withdrawal instructions and deadlines in its Student Handbook.
Check whether you need a temporary deferment, a leave of absence, a course transfer or a permanent withdrawal. They are different requests with different forms, fee consequences and approval conditions, so the right label matters before you submit anything.
Use the page for your institution and intake, then confirm the submission route, effective date, outstanding fees, return of institutional property and any Student’s Pass or National Service action. An application is not automatically approved simply because a form has been sent.

Choose the correct official source
Did you know that simply stopping attendance may not end your enrolment? SP explicitly states that absence does not count as withdrawal and that students remain liable for fees until the required withdrawal form is submitted. RP likewise directs students through its formal application route and publishes timing, document and outcome information.
| Question | Best starting source | Check immediately |
|---|---|---|
| I may return later | Your polytechnic’s course-deferment page | Eligibility, supporting reasons, maximum period and return conditions |
| I intend to leave the diploma | Your polytechnic’s withdrawal instructions and form | Effective date, fees, examination restrictions and property return |
| I want another diploma instead | Your polytechnic’s course-transfer route | Vacancies, academic standing and whether a fresh application is required |
| I need a short authorised break | Your polytechnic’s leave-of-absence route | Dates, evidence, attendance and assessment arrangements |
Use current institutional instructions rather than an old downloaded form. At RP, complete applications are submitted through the stated student system and students under 21 need parental consent. The page also explains that applications received after the first school day of Week 13 are not accepted for that semester. Other polytechnics can set different routes and deadlines.
Check the consequences before submitting
- Fees: ask which semester charges remain payable and whether timing changes the amount.
- Academic record: confirm how completed modules, assessments and any later readmission will be treated.
- Student’s Pass: international students should follow their institution’s instructions because ending or pausing study can affect the pass; admission status and immigration status are separate matters.
- National Service: NS-liable students should verify deferment implications through the institution and the official NS route.
- Loans, bursaries and sponsorships: check whether a change in enrolment triggers repayment, suspension or notification duties.
A useful first email to the student-services office includes your student ID, diploma, semester, intended last day and the reason you need advice. Do not email sensitive medical or financial documents until the institution tells you the approved submission channel.
Take the next practical step
Read the formal instruction page, speak to your course or student-services contact, and obtain a written acknowledgement after submission. If you are still deciding, compare the existing guides on polytechnic leave of absence, polytechnic course transfers and the wider ITE–polytechnic–university pathway.
