Start with the Bulgarian National Centre for Information and Documentation (NACID) to understand recognition of secondary education completed abroad, then open the current international-admissions page of the university and faculty offering your chosen programme. Qualification recognition establishes how the school award is treated in Bulgaria; it does not by itself secure admission to a course.
For a clear institutional example, Sofia University’s non-EU applicant page, last modified in September 2026, tells graduates of non-Bulgarian secondary schools to provide a NACID recognition certificate with converted grades and to follow the university’s document, enrolment and visa sequence. Use the equivalent current page for your chosen university; procedures are not interchangeable.
Check programme language, qualification documents and immigration steps as three separate decisions. Ask the faculty whether the course is taught in Bulgarian or another language, what language evidence or entrance assessment applies, and who must complete each recognition step. Admission approval is not a visa, and a visa process should not be started from an unofficial deadline or an assumed offer.

Practical checks before you apply
Name the exact programme and faculty
Record the degree title, level, faculty, teaching language and intended intake. A university may operate several admission routes, while a faculty may set subject or entrance requirements of its own. Use the programme page and the international-admissions office together.
Map the recognition sequence
Ask whether you should apply to NACID directly, submit recognition materials through the university or complete steps in a particular order. NACID’s electronic route requires a qualified electronic signature and may still require originals when electronic authenticity cannot be verified, so do not assume that uploading scans completes the process.
Prepare documents to the stated standard
List the diploma, grade supplement or transcript, translations, legalisation or authentication and any programme-specific evidence. Confirm the accepted language, format and recipient before paying for translations. Keep recognition documents and the university application checklist in the same tracker but label their destinations separately.
Separate admission from immigration
Once the institution explains the academic route, use its official international-student guidance for any Visa D or residence steps that apply. Check which admission or ministry document must exist first. Do not use a general travel page as proof that the university has accepted you.
