Find university internship information through your own university’s career office and faculty. Useful official starting points include NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduates and NTU career guidance and industry collaborations. Your programme’s rules determine which opportunities fit your degree.
Before applying, confirm whether the internship carries academic credit, requires prior approval, and fits your academic calendar. Ask your faculty which module or programme applies to your cohort. An employer’s offer and the university’s academic approval are separate checks.
Did you know the most useful first question may be “What do I need this internship to count towards?” Write down your degree, year of study, intended dates and learning goal. Then ask the career office or faculty for the right application route before committing to an arrangement.

Practical checks before you act
Read the degree rules alongside the opportunity
Save the programme handbook or module description with the vacancy. Compare dates, role, supervision and assessment requirements. If you cannot find a clear statement about credit, ask the faculty; a role being relevant to your interests does not by itself establish academic credit.
Ask about approval before accepting
The NUS guide distinguishes programmes administered by its career centre from faculty programmes, including the office issuing support letters. Use your own institution’s process. Keep a written answer about registration or approval so the employer and university are working from the same arrangement.
Look for work you can explain
As a planning exercise, identify two tasks you hope to learn and one type of feedback you want from a supervisor. Ask what a normal week involves. Concrete tasks help you compare opportunities more meaningfully than a job title alone.
Check the calendar and practical conditions
Record teaching weeks, examinations, start and end dates, work location and the employer’s stated terms. For an overseas placement or an international student, ask the university which immigration, insurance and work-authorisation sources apply. Do not transfer another student’s permissions to your own circumstances.
Your next step
Open your university’s career page and send one focused question to the responsible faculty or career adviser. Confirm the academic route, then build a shortlist of suitable roles.
