Suppose a student wants to improve Mathematics. “Score higher” is a goal. “Study every day” is an intention. “Do ten algebra questions tonight” is an action. Strategy begins when the student diagnoses the actual bottleneck and makes a choice around it.

If the student loses marks mainly because algebraic manipulation is slow, then spending most revision time on familiar geometry may feel productive but does not address the constraint. Leverage means obtaining a larger effect from a limited input. Strategic leverage comes from finding points where a small number of well-chosen actions change many downstream outcomes.

What matters is asymmetry: the chosen route should produce more value, more learning, more resilience, more speed, more optionality, or less risk than simply spreading effort evenly.

“Become excellent at English” is a goal. Budgets reveal strategy more clearly than slogans. So do calendars, staffing decisions, curriculum time, research attention and executive focus. A declared priority that receives no protected resources is not yet a functioning priority.

Resource allocation has three jobs. First, concentrate enough force to change the chosen problem. Second, maintain the systems that cannot be allowed to fail. Third, preserve reserves for shocks and emerging opportunities. Spending everything on immediate priorities may create fragility; protecting everything may create stagnation. Strategy balances commitment with resilience.

Constraints are not merely obstacles. They often reveal the strategy.

If time is the binding constraint, the strategy may focus on speed, simplification or sequencing. If trust is the binding constraint, more resources may not help until credibility is repaired. A small company cannot outspend a large incumbent. If these questions cannot be answered, the organisation may have activity, ambition or planning, but not yet strategy.

Good Strategy Is Coherent

Coherence means that diagnosis, choice, resource allocation and action fit together. A strong strategy does not need hundreds of initiatives. It needs a small number of mutually reinforcing decisions that attack the right problem.

This is why strategy can look surprisingly simple after it has been discovered. The complexity lies in finding the right simplification. Once the critical challenge is understood, many distracting actions can be removed and the remaining work becomes easier to coordinate.

Good Strategy Preserves the Objective While Changing the Route

Adaptation does not mean abandoning direction every time conditions change. It means distinguishing the durable objective from the temporary method.

If a route is blocked, a strategic system should be able to change the route without forgetting why it was travelling. This is one reason explicit objectives and assumptions matter: they tell us what may change and what should remain stable.

Strategy Is Not About Sounding Clever

Strategic language can become abstract very quickly: transformation, innovation, synergy, excellence, disruption, resilience, optimisation. These words are not wrong, but they do not become strategy until they are attached to choices.

Replace vague language with operational questions. What problem? Which constraint? Which people? Which resources? Which trade-off? Which sequence? Which evidence? Which failure mode? Which next decision?

At its deepest level, strategy connects three worlds.

The bridge is never guaranteed. Strategy does not control the entire world. It changes odds by improving alignment between action and reality.

Diagnosis without choice produces analysis. Choice without concentration produces dilution. Concentration without coherent action produces waste. Action without feedback produces drift. A functioning strategy needs the whole chain.
