How Archives Catalogues and Finding Aids Work

An archival catalogue does not replace the archive. It is the navigation layer that helps a researcher move from a question to a collection, from a collection to a series, from a series to a file, and from a file back to the record itself.

A search result tells you that something may exist. A finding aid tells you where it belongs and why it matters.

That difference is central to archival research. Search engines encourage item-by-item discovery. Archives are frequently organised through provenance, hierarchy and relationships.
