Negative questions are difficult because the mind often locks onto the familiar content word and misses the word that reverses the task. A child who reads quickly may answer what did happen when the question asks what did not happen, or select the true statement when asked for the exception.
This page uses North Spring Primary School only as the school-family context named in the preserved 2019 URL. Its reader job is negative questions: don’t answer the opposite of what was asked.
The old page contained historic Yishun centre, tutor, telephone and generic syllabus claims. Those are not carried forward. eduKate Singapore is an independent tuition provider and is not affiliated with North Spring Primary School, MOE or SEAB.
The Small Word Can Control the Whole Task
- not;
- except;
- least;
- never;
- unlikely;
- which statement is false?
These words change the answer contract even when the rest of the question looks familiar.
Build the Contract in Plain Language
- Circle the reversing word.
- Restate the question in plain English.
- Say what kind of answer would satisfy it.
- Only then inspect the options or passage.
For example, Which of the following did the character NOT do? becomes: I must find the one action that did not happen.
Use the Truth-Table Method
| Option | Did it happen? | Fits “did NOT happen”? |
|---|---|---|
| A | Yes | No |
| B | No | Yes |
| C | Yes | No |
This slows the decision just enough to prevent the reversal error.
Negative Questions Often Punish Automaticity
Students who know the content well can still answer wrongly because they move too quickly. The repair is not more subject knowledge. It is deliberate instruction reading.
Separate Knowledge From Task Interpretation
If the student can explain all four options correctly but still chooses the wrong one, the issue is task interpretation rather than comprehension knowledge.
Use Contrast Pairs
- Which statement is true?
- Which statement is NOT true?
- Which action happened?
- Which action did NOT happen?
Ask the child to explain exactly what changed between the pair.
Negative Questions in Vocabulary
Questions such as Which word is least suitable? require the student to compare all candidates, not simply identify one acceptable word. The answer comes from the weakest fit, not the strongest.
A Negative-Question Diagnostic
| Observed pattern | Likely issue |
|---|---|
| Knows passage but answers opposite | instruction reversal |
| Misses “except” repeatedly | attention to task words |
| Can fix immediately after rereading | careless/selection rather than knowledge |
| Still wrong after contract restatement | content or reasoning gap |
How a 3-Pax Class Trains Negative Questions
In a maximum three-student group, learners can restate the same negative question before answering. The tutor can see whether the error occurs at instruction reading, evidence checking or final selection.
Current MOE English Context
The MOE Primary English Language Syllabus 2020 develops strategic reading and task interpretation. Negative questions are useful practice because they require students to read instructions as carefully as the passage itself.

Signs Negative-Question Control Is Improving
- Students identify reversing words quickly.
- Questions are restated accurately.
- Opposite-answer errors decrease.
- Knowledge errors are separated from instruction errors.
- Mixed comprehension becomes more stable.
