Comprehension answers can fail in two opposite directions: too little or too much. A short answer may omit a required relationship. A long answer may include irrelevant detail, weaken precision or introduce unsupported claims. Strong answering is calibrated to the question.

The Question Sets an Answer Contract
Before writing, the student should identify:
- what is being asked;
- which relationship is required;
- how many parts are needed;
- whether evidence is required;
- whether the answer should be literal or inferential.
The answer should satisfy that contract—no less and no more than useful.
Too Little: The Missing-Link Problem

Shortness is not the problem by itself. Missing required meaning is.
Too Much: The Dilution Problem
Students sometimes copy an entire passage region because they fear omitting something important.
- irrelevant details enter the answer;
- the main relationship becomes harder to see;
- unsupported interpretation may be added;
- more grammar errors become possible;
- time is lost.
More words do not automatically create a safer answer.
Use the Minimum Complete Answer
A strong target is the minimum complete answer: the shortest response that preserves every required relationship and enough evidence.
Students can then expand only if the question genuinely requires elaboration.
Evidence Radius
When locating evidence, start with the smallest relevant region and widen only if needed.
- Find the question anchor.
- Locate the nearest passage region.
- Select the detail that directly supports the answer.
- Widen only if one detail is insufficient.
This prevents both under-answering and paragraph-copying.
Inference Needs a Boundary
An inference answer can become too large when the student adds plausible ideas not supported by the text.
Use:
clue → bounded conclusion → evidence check.
If the passage supports “anxious”, do not automatically escalate to “terrified of losing everything” unless the evidence warrants it.
Comparison Answers Need Symmetry
For comparison questions, students should check that both sides are written at the same level.
- Character A did X, whereas Character B did Y.
- Paragraph 2 focuses on cause, while paragraph 4 focuses on consequence.
Writing a detailed explanation for one side and one vague word for the other creates an unbalanced answer.
Own Words Does Not Mean Remove the Meaning
When students paraphrase, they may shorten so aggressively that the relationship disappears. The aim is to preserve meaning in fresh wording, not to remove essential detail.
The Deletion Test
Take one phrase out of the answer. Does the answer contract still hold?
- If yes, the phrase may be unnecessary.
- If no, restore it.
This teaches concise completeness.
The Addition Test
Before adding a sentence, ask whether it changes the answer’s completeness or evidence. If it merely repeats the same idea, leave it out.
