Vocabulary depth, not vocabulary display

Knowing a word means more than knowing a dictionary definition. Students should know how the word behaves in a sentence, what words commonly appear beside it, what tone it carries and whether it suits the situation.

We teach vocabulary through themes, reading and repeated application so words become usable rather than decorative.

Comprehension accuracy

Students need to identify what a passage states, what it implies and what evidence supports an answer. We teach them to notice relationships such as contrast, cause and effect, sequence, motive and pronoun reference.

The aim is to make answers precise rather than long. A good response addresses the question directly and uses only the evidence needed.

Composition control

Strong composition writing needs structure before embellishment. Students need a coherent situation, purposeful characters, logical sequence, controlled pacing and a resolution that completes the story.

We teach students to plan quickly, choose relevant detail and use vocabulary because it sharpens meaning, not because it sounds advanced.

Sentence-level craft

Good writing also depends on sentence control. Students work on complete sentences, variation, punctuation, pronoun clarity, connectors and the removal of repetition.

Revision becomes part of writing rather than an afterthought.

How the skills connect across Primary school

In the lower Primary years, the focus is reading confidence, sentence formation and useful vocabulary. In the middle years, comprehension and paragraph control become more deliberate. In the upper Primary years, students need to combine those skills under examination conditions.

PSLE English

Near PSLE, we alternate between targeted repair and mixed practice. Students need to know not only how to perform a skill, but when a particular question requires it.

We also work on pacing, checking and selective revision so effort is directed toward the areas that still matter most.
