The Question Is Part of the Subject
Students sometimes separate “knowing the subject” from “reading the question”. In an examination, they cannot be separated.
A student may know percentage but misidentify the reference quantity. A student may know the Science concept but compare the wrong variables. A student may understand an English character’s motive but fail to provide the evidence requested.

- Has the unit changed?
- Does “remaining” refer to the original amount or a later state?
- Is the student being asked for a value, a difference, a rate or a percentage?
We make quantities visible before calculation. Models, diagrams, tables and equations are used where they clarify the relationship. The student is then taught to keep working recoverable enough to check.
This discipline supports fractions, ratio, percentage, rate, measurement, geometry, data and multi-step problem solving. It also reduces the number of mistakes incorrectly dismissed as “careless”.
PSLE Science: Evidence Has Boundaries
Science questions often tempt students to answer from topic memory instead of the evidence in front of them.
A student recognises “plants” and writes a memorised statement about photosynthesis. The question, however, may be about a comparison in a specific experiment. The answer must be built from the provided conditions and the relevant concept, not from everything known about the chapter.

- identify the variable that changed;
- identify what was kept constant;
- select the relevant concept;
- state the relationship supported by the evidence; and

4. Execute
The method is carried out with enough organisation that an error can be located later.
5. Return to the question
The final answer is checked against the original request. This closes the loop and catches answers that solve a related problem but not the stated one.
The Fencing Method: Teach Attention Before Complexity
When reading discipline is weak, complex examination questions can create too many possible failure points at once. We reduce the field temporarily.
The student may practise identifying command words without answering, comparing two nearly identical Mathematics questions to find the changed condition, or examining two Science experiments to decide which evidence is relevant.
Once selective attention is stronger, the full complexity returns. The point is not to simplify PSLE permanently. The point is to build the tool required to handle PSLE complexity.
