We look for a stronger form of confidence:

Retrieval is effortful by design. That effort tells us whether the knowledge has become usable memory.
Metacognition Without Making It Complicated
Students do not need academic terminology to become more aware of their own learning. They need a few useful questions:
- What part do I understand?
- Where exactly did I become uncertain?
- What clue made me choose this method?
- How could I check the answer?
- Have I made this kind of mistake before?
- What should I do first if I meet a similar question again?
This helps the child become a participant in the repair rather than simply the recipient of corrections.
What a 90-Minute Lesson Can Look Like
- Retrieval: older material returns before notes are opened.
- School-state review: recent work or a repeated difficulty is inspected.

Extend
For a strong student, we remove unnecessary scaffolds and increase uncertainty. The learner must choose, justify and sometimes compare several possible routes.
How We Use School Papers to Measure Independence
A paper tells us more than whether the student remembered content. It shows what happened when the tutor was absent.
- Did the student know how to start?
- Did old knowledge return without a prompt?
- Did the student check an answer that felt suspicious?
- Did a familiar error reappear?
- Could the student repair the mistake independently after receiving the paper?
That last question is especially valuable. A correction copied from a model answer tells us very little. A correction reconstructed from understanding tells us much more.

- the child asks more specific questions instead of saying “I don’t know”;
- homework begins with less waiting for adult help;
