School Terms and Holidays 2015

It was first published in November 2014 to list Singapore’s School Terms and Holidays for 2015.

The old 2015 dates are not current and should not be used for present-day planning. What remains useful is the structure underneath them: two semesters, four terms, short breaks, a mid-year vacation, a year-end vacation, and a repeating cycle of teaching, assessment, recovery and re-entry.

A school calendar is not only a list of dates. It is a map of when different kinds of learning are possible.

The current 2026 school-year rhythm

For MOE primary and secondary schools, the 2026 year remains recognisably four-term:

The corresponding main school vacations are 14–22 March, 30 May–28 June, 5–13 September, and 21 November–31 December. Families should still verify school-specific arrangements from current MOE or school notices because programme days and individual-school events may differ.

Why the 2015 and 2026 calendars still look similar

Dates shift, examination systems change and school operations evolve, but the broad rhythm remains because schools need recurring cycles.

A term starts with relatively fresh capacity. New topics enter. Homework and projects accumulate. CCAs and school events consume time. Tests produce evidence. By the end of the term, the learner is carrying more unfinished cognitive work than at the beginning.

A term is a cycle of intake → practice → feedback → correction → fatigue.

The break interrupts that accumulation.

School holidays are not empty time

A break can perform several legitimate jobs:

A good holiday does not try to maximise every job at once.

The two common holiday mistakes

The first mistake is treating the break as complete shutdown. A long period with no reading, retrieval or routine can make previously secure learning less accessible.

The second mistake is recreating a full school day for the entire holiday. That removes recovery and autonomy—the very things the break can restore.

The holiday should change mode, not simply switch learning on or off.

The March break: reset, inspect, repair

The short break after Term 1 is well suited to a small reset. Sleep can recover. Families can inspect weighted assessments or school feedback. One or two high-value gaps can be repaired before Term 2 adds more material.

It is usually too short for a complete reinvention of the student. The better job is to prevent a manageable gap from becoming a Term 2 prerequisite problem.

The June break: a larger system reset

The mid-year vacation creates more capacity. It can contain several phases rather than one repeated schedule.

The sequence matters. Starting the holiday with four weeks of intensive academic work can leave the child entering Term 3 already fatigued.

September is a bridge into the final term

The same one-week break has different jobs for different learners.

The dates are shared. The receiver state is not.

The year-end holiday is really four different phases

1. Decompression

The first days after school ends can be genuinely lighter. Sleep, play and family time have value after a sustained school year.

2. Exploration

Children can build world knowledge through travel, museums, parks, public transport, hobbies, photography, cooking, sport and reading without turning the experience into another worksheet.

3. Selective consolidation

If the school year exposed an important gap, the longer vacation gives enough runway for a proper repair cycle instead of last-minute patching.

4. Re-entry

The final week or two can restore waking times, reading, light retrieval, stationery and school logistics so the first week of January does not feel like a time-zone change.

A school calendar is also a memory calendar

Learning becomes less accessible when it is not retrieved. That does not mean every holiday needs daily tuition. It means long gaps benefit from small, purposeful returns.

Maintenance can be light. Timing matters more than volume.

Plan backwards from fixed dates

The most useful modern use of a school calendar is backward planning.

  1. Mark the known assessment or examination window.
  2. Decide what must be stable before that date.
  3. Allow time for first understanding.
  4. Allow time for delayed retrieval.
  5. Allow time for mixed practice and transfer.
  6. Allow time for timed execution.
  7. Build buffer before the performance week.

The school calendar is not the child’s whole calendar

National dates are only one layer. The child’s real operating calendar also contains school tests, projects, CCA, tuition, family events, travel, medical appointments and ordinary downtime.

Overload becomes visible when all of these are placed on the same map.

Look for collision weeks

A collision week is not created by one unreasonable demand. It appears when several reasonable demands overlap: two tests, a project deadline, a CCA competition, tuition homework and family commitments.

The calendar lets work move earlier where possible. This is one of the simplest ways to reduce last-minute conflict.

A shared calendar can reduce family arguments

Parents, students and tutors often see different time horizons. The parent sees an exam in two weeks. The child sees homework due tomorrow. The tutor sees a prerequisite that should have been repaired last month.

Put the demands on one timeline. The disagreement becomes a scheduling problem rather than a character judgement.

When holiday tuition makes sense

Holiday tuition is useful when it has a defined educational job:

It is less useful when the only argument is that an empty day should be filled.

Unstructured time is not wasted capacity

A fully scheduled break can remove one of the rare times when children decide what to do with their own hours.

The calendar changes by age

Lower Primary

Play, reading, sleep, family routine and gentle maintenance usually matter more than aggressive advance preparation.

Upper Primary

Academic gaps become more visible. Holidays can include targeted repair while preserving broad reading and real-world experience.

Secondary

More subjects and CCAs increase scheduling complexity. Students should progressively own their own calendar.

National-examination years

Breaks closer to national examinations may function partly as revision periods, but quality of planning matters more than raw hours.

The student should inherit the calendar

  1. Parent creates schedule; child follows.
  2. Parent and child plan together.
  3. Child proposes; parent checks feasibility.
  4. Child manages ordinary weeks independently.
  5. Child notices collision periods and asks for help early.

The calendar is a training ground for responsibility.

What changed from 2015 to 2026?

The exact dates changed. Examination systems changed. Technology changed how schools communicate and how students receive work.

The underlying logistical problem did not.

Learning, recovery and family life still have to fit inside one finite year.
