Did You Know the Mosquito That Bites You Is Female?

Male mosquitoes do not bite people for blood.

They feed on plant-derived liquids such as nectar.

Female mosquitoes also feed on nectar, but females of many species take blood meals because nutrients from blood help them produce eggs.

That one fact is strange enough.

Singapore makes it stranger.

The National Environment Agency deliberately releases large numbers of male Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in selected neighbourhoods.

Those males do not bite. When they mate with urban females that do not carry the same Wolbachia strain, the resulting eggs do not hatch. Repeated releases can reduce the Aedes aegypti population.

So understanding one tiny life cycle connects Primary Science directly to a real public-health strategy happening around Singapore.

Egg → larva → pupa → adult.

Teaching goal: By the end of this manual, a learner should be able to describe the mosquito life cycle in order, explain which stages live in water, distinguish male and female adult feeding behaviour at an age-appropriate level, and connect removal of stagnant water to breaking the mosquito life cycle.

1. The Singapore Primary Science Anchor

The mosquito is another insect with complete metamorphosis:

  1. egg;
  2. larva;
  3. pupa;
  4. adult.

The same four broad stage names appear in the butterfly cycle, but the organisms use different habitats and structures at each stage.

2. Stage One: Eggs

Different mosquito species lay eggs in different ways.

Aedes mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti lay eggs on the inner walls of water-holding containers, just above the waterline.

When water later covers the eggs, larvae can hatch.

3. Stage Two: Larva — The “Wriggler”

Mosquito larvae live in water.

They move actively and are sometimes called “wigglers”.

They feed on microscopic organisms and organic material in the water, depending on species.

As they grow, larvae moult several times because their exoskeleton must be replaced.

4. Stage Three: Pupa — Still in Water, But No Feeding

The mosquito pupa also lives in water.

Unlike the larva, it does not feed.

Inside, the insect is undergoing the final transformation into the winged adult form.

Eventually the adult emerges at the water surface and flies away.

5. Stage Four: Adult

Adult mosquitoes are flying insects.

Both males and females can feed on plant sugars.

Females of many species also take blood meals. For Aedes aegypti, that blood meal provides resources used in egg production.

After eggs develop, the female seeks suitable water-holding sites for the next generation.

The cycle reconnects.

6. Why Stagnant Water Matters

Water is essential to the immature mosquito stages.

That means removing unnecessary standing water removes places where eggs can hatch and larvae and pupae can develop.

Possible breeding sites can include:

  • flower-pot plates;
  • pails;
  • discarded containers;
  • blocked drains;
  • water collected in outdoor objects.

The learner should see the causal chain:

standing water → aquatic immature stages can develop → more adults can emerge.

7. The Singapore Shock: Releasing Mosquitoes to Reduce Mosquitoes

Singapore’s Project Wolbachia uses a biological detail from the mosquito life cycle.

NEA releases male Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti.

Male mosquitoes do not bite.

When released males mate with urban females without the compatible Wolbachia infection, the eggs do not hatch.

As of 2026, NEA is expanding the programme across additional Singapore neighbourhoods, with a target of coverage around half of households by the end of the year.

The important Primary lesson is not the technology details.

If you understand a life cycle, you can sometimes identify a stage where intervention changes what happens next.

8. The Hero Test: Public Health Is Often Prevention Before Anyone Is Sick

A public-health worker removing breeding sites, measuring mosquito populations or testing a control method may never know the names of the people protected by the work.

That is still heroic.

It is knowledge being used before harm arrives.

Sometimes saving somebody begins by understanding a tiny life cycle well enough to interrupt it.

9. Do Not Turn Every Mosquito into the Same Mosquito

More than one mosquito species lives in Singapore.

Species differ in habitat, feeding behaviour, disease transmission and egg-laying strategy.

Project Wolbachia in Singapore specifically targets Aedes aegypti.

So the broad life-cycle model is useful, but species-level claims should stay species-specific.

10. Common Misconceptions — and Repairs

  • “All mosquitoes bite people.” Male mosquitoes do not take blood meals.
  • “Mosquito larvae live on land.” Larvae and pupae are aquatic.
  • “The pupa feeds to grow into an adult.” Mosquito pupae do not feed.
  • “A tiny amount of water cannot matter.” Some Aedes mosquitoes can use very small water-holding containers.
  • “Project Wolbachia releases biting females.” Singapore’s suppression programme releases male Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes.
  • “Removing standing water kills adult mosquitoes.” It mainly removes breeding habitat and interrupts development of future adults.

11. Teach It: Break the Cycle

Draw four boxes: egg, larva, pupa, adult.

  1. Mark which stages require water.
  2. Circle the adult female stage that lays eggs.
  3. Ask what happens if breeding water is removed before larvae develop.
  4. Ask what Project Wolbachia changes in the reproductive step.

The goal is causal reasoning, not fear of mosquitoes.
