Wait, What? A Chick Is Not a Different Kind of Animal

A chick looks different from an adult chicken, but it is the same organism at an earlier stage of its life.

Primary 3 goal: recognise the chicken life cycle as egg → chick → adult chicken, explain what changes as the animal grows, and compare this pattern with other P3 animal life cycles.

Primary 3 Science asks learners to recognise and compare life cycles of several animals. The chicken is useful because its young stage already resembles the adult much more closely than a caterpillar resembles a butterfly.

2. The Chicken Life Cycle

The adult stage leads to a new generation, so a life cycle is not simply a straight line that stops at adulthood.

3. Stage 1 — Egg

The chicken begins its visible life-cycle sequence inside an egg. Under suitable conditions, an embryo develops inside a fertilised egg until hatching.

At Primary 3, detailed embryology is not required. The useful idea is that the egg is the stage before the chick emerges.

4. Stage 2 — Chick

A chick is a young chicken. It has features that make it recognisably bird-like and chicken-like, but it is smaller and not yet an adult.

  • It grows larger.
  • Its feathers and body proportions change.
  • Its behaviour and ability to survive independently develop.
  • It does not pass through a larva or pupa stage.

5. Stage 3 — Adult Chicken

An adult chicken is fully grown and capable of reproduction. Adult hens can lay eggs. A fertilised egg can begin the next generation of the cycle.

7. Growth Is Not the Same as a New Stage Every Day
