The Primary Science runtime
A mark is an output. Before we add more worksheets, we first ask what mechanism produced that output.
- Diagnose — identify whether the bottleneck is knowledge, misconception, scientific language, inquiry, representation, transfer, accuracy or examination load.
- Repair — fix the earliest unstable dependency rather than drilling the final symptom.
- Connect — link facts into systems, cycles, interactions, causes and effects.
- Explain — convert an internal idea into visible scientific reasoning.
- Transfer — use the same concept when the diagram, wording, experiment or context changes.
- Examine — retrieve, select, reason and communicate accurately under time and paper conditions.
Why this order matters
If we practise before diagnosing, we can automate a misconception. If we demand keywords before the learner understands the mechanism, the answer becomes memorised language without a usable model. If we rush into full papers before retrieval and transfer are stable, examination practice becomes repeated evidence of the same weakness.
The aim is therefore not simply to complete more Science. It is to make the student’s scientific system more reliable.

The four-year handover

What the official curriculum is asking students to do
Singapore’s 2023 Primary Science syllabus organises learning around scientific knowledge, practices and values, with the wider vision of Inspire, Inquire and Innovate. The 2026 PSLE Science assessment then asks students to demonstrate both knowledge with understanding and application of knowledge and scientific inquiry.
That is why a student can know a chapter and still lose marks. The examination is testing whether knowledge can be reconstructed, applied, interpreted and communicated when the surface changes.

2026 PSLE Science: the examination state
For 2026, Standard PSLE Science is one written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes. Booklet A has 30 multiple-choice questions for 60 marks. Booklet B has 10–11 structured questions for 40 marks. All questions are compulsory.
The implication is important: preparation must support both rapid discrimination in multiple-choice work and visible scientific reasoning in structured responses.

Why three students changes the teaching loop
In a three-student class, the tutor can see each student’s answer path rather than only the final mark. One child may have a concept error, another may understand but use an incomplete explanation, while the third may be accurate but too slow. Those are different states and should receive different repairs.
The small-group advantage is therefore not simply “more attention.” It is higher-resolution diagnosis and faster feedback.
