What Is Translation Studies?

Translation Studies is the interdisciplinary study of how meaning moves across languages, cultures, media and communicative situations. It examines written translation, interpreting, literary translation, audiovisual translation, localisation, terminology, translation technology, machine translation, professional ethics and the history and theory of translation.

Translation is not word substitution. Languages divide reality differently, organise grammar differently and carry cultural assumptions that do not line up perfectly. The translator therefore makes decisions about meaning, audience, register, purpose and evidence.

Translation Studies asks what must remain invariant, what must change, and how a new text can perform an equivalent communicative job in a different linguistic world.

Source text and target text
