An interruption can last ten seconds and cost more than ten seconds. A message arrives while a student is reading. Someone asks a question during Mathematics. A notification appears while an essay argument is forming. The interruption ends, but the student must reconstruct what was happening before it.

The evening can fragment without looking empty

A student may spend three hours at the desk while receiving only short islands of sustained thought. This explains why elapsed study time can look substantial while difficult work moves slowly.

Time management therefore includes continuity. The quality of the minutes matters, not merely their number.

External and internal interruptions
