What Is Music?
Music is the organised human use of sound and silence through rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, timbre, texture, form and performance. It can be composed, improvised, notated, recorded, transmitted orally, generated digitally or created through combinations of these practices.
Music is both physical and cultural. Sound waves travel through air, instruments resonate, voices vibrate and ears detect changing pressure. Yet music begins only when human systems of expectation, pattern and meaning organise those sounds into experience.
Music turns time into structure and sound into expectation, memory and shared feeling.
Sound
Sound begins as vibration transmitted through a medium. Frequency relates to perceived pitch, amplitude relates to perceived loudness and waveform structure contributes to timbre.
Music uses these physical properties but does not reduce to them. Two notes with the same fundamental frequency can sound very different because their overtone structures and envelopes differ.
Pitch
Pitch is the perceptual organisation of frequency. Musical systems divide pitch space into scales and intervals. These divisions differ across traditions.
Western equal temperament is one tuning system among many. Music education becomes stronger when learners understand that familiar scales are historical conventions rather than universal laws.
Rhythm
Rhythm organises events through duration, accent, repetition and grouping. A pulse can establish a regular reference while syncopation places emphasis where listeners do not expect it.
Rhythm is embodied. People tap, dance, breathe and coordinate through temporal patterns, which is why musical time is experienced physically as well as intellectually.
Meter
Meter groups beats into recurring patterns of stronger and weaker positions. Different meters create different expectations, and some traditions organise rhythm through additive or irregular groupings rather than simple repeated bars.
Tempo
Tempo describes speed. Changing tempo alters energy, articulation and the listener’s perception of structure. The same melody can feel intimate, ceremonial or urgent at different tempos.
Melody
Melody is a coherent sequence of pitches perceived as a line. Melodies gain identity through contour, interval, rhythm, repetition and phrase structure.
Listeners remember melodies not as isolated frequencies but as relationships unfolding over time.
Motif
A motif is a small musical idea that can be repeated, transformed, extended or combined. Large works often achieve coherence by developing small motifs across time.
Harmony
Harmony concerns simultaneous pitches and the relationships among chords or sonorities. Harmonic systems can establish tension and release, stability and movement.
Not all musical traditions organise sound through functional harmony. Drone, modal, heterophonic and other structures demonstrate alternative ways of creating coherence.
Consonance and dissonance
Consonance and dissonance describe perceived stability and tension, but their use depends on style and history. Sounds considered unstable in one period may become ordinary in another.
Timbre
Timbre is tone colour: the quality that lets listeners distinguish a violin from a flute playing the same note. Timbre depends on overtone structure, attack, decay, resonance and performance technique.
Contemporary production treats timbre as a compositional dimension in its own right.
Dynamics
Dynamics concern changes in loudness and intensity. They shape phrasing, hierarchy and drama. A crescendo can create expectation even when pitch remains stable.
Texture
Texture describes how musical layers relate. Monophony uses one principal line; homophony combines melody with supporting harmony; polyphony contains multiple independent lines; heterophony varies one line simultaneously.
Texture changes how listeners distribute attention across the musical field.
Form
Musical form organises larger spans of time. Repetition, contrast, return and transformation allow listeners to build expectations and memory.
Forms can be tightly codified or emergent. Binary, ternary, rondo, sonata, verse-chorus and through-composed structures are examples from different traditions and periods.
Phrase
A musical phrase is a unit that feels like a coherent thought. Phrases can create question-and-answer relationships or build toward larger structural goals.
Notation
Notation represents musical information visually. Staff notation encodes pitch, duration and other performance instructions; other traditions use tablature, cipher notation, graphic scores or oral systems.
Notation is a model of music rather than music itself. It preserves some dimensions and leaves others to performance convention.
Performance
Performance turns musical structure into sounding time. Tempo flexibility, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, tuning and ensemble coordination all influence interpretation.
A score does not eliminate interpretation. Two expert performances of the same notation can be recognisably different while remaining faithful to the work.
Practice
Effective music practice isolates difficult passages, slows them down, diagnoses errors and gradually rebuilds fluency. Repetition without feedback can stabilise mistakes.
Practice also develops automaticity so attention can shift from basic execution to expression and ensemble awareness.
Improvisation
Improvisation creates music in real time within a field of conventions and possibilities. It depends on internalised vocabulary, listening, anticipation and response.
Improvisation is not the absence of structure. Skilled improvisers operate inside deep structures learned through practice.
Composition
Composition organises musical ideas intentionally across time. Composers work with motif, harmony, texture, form, instrumentation and silence.
Composition can begin from melody, rhythm, sound design, text, concept or technology. There is no single correct starting point.
Arrangement
Arrangement adapts existing musical material for different instruments, voices, styles or structures. Changing register, texture and orchestration can radically alter how a piece feels without changing its core melody.
Orchestration
Orchestration assigns musical material across instruments. Instrument range, timbre, balance and playing technique determine what combinations are practical and expressive.
The voice
The human voice is both instrument and language carrier. Breath, vocal-fold vibration, resonance and articulation shape singing.
Vocal music adds text, which creates another layer of rhythm, meaning and interpretation.
Instruments
Instruments transform physical action into organised vibration. Strings, air columns, membranes, solid bodies and electronic circuits produce sound through different mechanisms.
Instrument design shapes musical possibility because range, sustain and articulation influence what can be performed.
Ensemble
Ensemble performance requires coordination. Musicians align timing, tuning, dynamics and interpretation through listening and visual cues.
Ensemble skill is relational. A technically excellent player can still weaken the group by failing to listen.
Conducting

Listening
Musical listening can be passive or analytical. Active listening tracks form, instrumentation, rhythmic changes, harmonic movement and expressive choices.
Learning to listen analytically does not reduce emotional experience. It can deepen it by revealing how the effect was made.
Music cognition
Music cognition studies how the brain and mind process rhythm, pitch, expectation, memory and emotion. Listeners predict what may happen next based on learned patterns.
Surprise is therefore meaningful only against expectation. Music manipulates prediction continuously.
Memory
Musical memory stores motifs, tonal relationships, rhythms and larger structures. Repetition strengthens familiarity while variation preserves interest.
Music can also cue autobiographical memory strongly because sound becomes associated with people, places and events.
Emotion
Music can evoke emotion through tempo, register, timbre, expectation, association and cultural convention. No single musical feature maps mechanically to one emotion.

Mixing balances recorded elements through level, stereo position, equalisation, dynamics and effects. It shapes hierarchy and spatial impression.
Mastering
Mastering prepares a completed mix for distribution, managing overall tonal balance, loudness, sequencing and technical compatibility.
Electronic music
Electronic music creates or manipulates sound through synthesis, sampling, sequencing and digital processing. Composers can design timbres that have no direct acoustic equivalent.
Technology becomes part of musical vocabulary rather than merely a recording tool.
Sampling
Sampling reuses recorded sound as musical material. It can create new relationships through repetition, transformation and juxtaposition.
Sampling also raises legal and ethical questions about ownership, attribution and cultural context.
Music and mathematics
