Critical Care Begins With Physiological Threat
Severe respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, major trauma, neurological deterioration and other unstable states can overwhelm normal organ reserve. Critical care focuses on keeping essential systems functioning while the underlying cause is treated.
Organ Support Buys Time
Mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medicines, renal replacement therapy and other forms of organ support do not necessarily cure disease. They can maintain physiology while definitive treatment, recovery or further diagnostic clarification occurs.
Monitoring Is Continuous Because the State Can Change Quickly
