How Mountain Capitals Work

Quick Read. Mountain capitals demonstrate how topography can become governance. Valleys decide where roads fit, mountains decide where air stagnates, catchments decide where water comes from and seismic zones decide what buildings must survive.

Same terrain class, different city

Kabul combines basin constraint with fragility; Kathmandu adds heritage and seismic risk; Thimphu is a small Himalayan command city; Bishkek faces winter air stress; Dushanbe connects to migration and hydropower; Tehran combines huge scale with air, water and seismic constraints; and Sana’a adds severe water stress and conflict.

Hidden rule

Do not treat mountains as scenery. They are routing algorithms for roads, water, weather, pollution, settlement and defence.
