How Bangkok, Hanoi and Mainland Southeast Asian Capitals Connect

Quick Read. Mainland Southeast Asian capitals are not isolated national dots. Rivers, highways, railways, manufacturing chains, tourism, migration and energy systems connect them into overlapping regional networks.

The useful comparison is not sameness

Bangkok is a huge delta service metropolis; Hanoi combines political command with northern industrial networks; Phnom Penh is a rapidly growing river capital; Vientiane is much smaller but increasingly altered by regional rail; and Naypyidaw is a planned administrative capital whose political role diverges from commercial centrality.
