Growth Mindset in Education: Useful When Grounded in Strategy, Evidence and Real Learning

The evidence is more modest than popular summaries suggest
A large 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin, covering 63 studies and 97,672 participants, reported only a very small overall achievement effect and found that the effect was not statistically reliable after corrections for potential publication bias; the highest-quality subset also showed no significant effect. A separate meta-analysis found small benefits in some targeted, high-fidelity settings, illustrating that results vary by population and implementation.
A 2025 structured review indexed by ERIC similarly concluded that school-age growth-mindset interventions generally show null or very modest academic-achievement effects. The practical conclusion is not “mindset is useless.” It is: do not substitute mindset messaging for strong teaching, knowledge, practice and support.
What the idea still gets right
Children do form beliefs about ability. Those beliefs can change how they interpret difficulty. “I cannot do this yet because I do not understand fractions” leaves a route for diagnosis and repair. “I am a person who is bad at Mathematics” converts a current performance state into an identity.
Education benefits when adults keep the first interpretation available while remaining truthful about current performance. A child who is currently weak at a skill should not be told they are secretly excellent. They should be shown what is weak, what can change and what evidence will count as improvement.
Replace “try harder” with a better causal model
Effort is only one input. Performance can depend on prior knowledge, strategy, task representation, attention, working memory, practice quality, feedback, timing, emotional state and available support. More effort applied to the wrong process can produce more frustration.
A stronger response to difficulty is:
- What exactly is failing?
- What prerequisite or operation does this task require?
- What strategy are you currently using?
- What feedback tells us why it failed?
- What is the smallest useful repair?
- What new task will show whether the repair transfers?
Praise should point toward controllable, useful processes
Generic praise such as “You’re so smart” can make ability feel like a possession that must be protected. But replacing it mechanically with “Great effort!” is not enough. Effort deserves praise when it is relevant and productive.
More useful feedback is specific: “You changed your diagram after noticing the quantities did not match,” “You checked the passage instead of guessing,” or “You practised retrieval across several days and can now answer without the prompt.” The learner sees which action produced the improvement.
Difficulty is information, not automatically a virtue
Some difficulty is productive because it requires retrieval, discrimination, reasoning or persistence. Other difficulty is noise: unreadable instructions, missing prerequisites, excessive load or practice far beyond the learner’s current reach.
A growth-oriented classroom does not celebrate struggle for its own sake. It asks whether the struggle is generating learning. If not, the task or support should change.
High expectations require high support
Believing students can develop should not mean demanding identical outcomes on identical timelines. Learners begin from different knowledge states and may require different amounts or kinds of support.
High expectations become credible when adults provide the instruction, practice, feedback and time that make improvement possible. Otherwise “You can do anything if you try” can sound like blame when performance does not improve.
A mark is a state measurement, not an identity
If a child scores 42%, the mark tells us something important about performance under those particular conditions. It does not by itself explain why the score occurred, how permanent the weakness is or what the learner can eventually achieve.
The useful next move is diagnosis. Separate result from cause, and cause from identity.
Make improvement visible
A belief in development becomes much stronger when students can see receipts of development. Keep comparable work samples, retrieval scores, reading fluency records, error counts or timed-task performance. Compare old and new attempts.
Evidence allows the learner to say, “I used to need four prompts; now I need one,” or “I used to misread this question type; I solved three changed examples independently.” That is more powerful than a poster saying “Believe in yourself.”
Teach strategy switching
Persistence is useful only while the chosen route remains plausible. Mature learners also know when to stop, inspect and switch strategies.
A practical rule is: if the same attempt repeatedly produces the same failure, do not merely intensify it. Ask what assumption or method needs to change. This connects growth mindset with metacognition and cognitive flexibility.
Growth is domain-specific
A student may become more capable in composition planning without improving spelling, or improve algebraic manipulation while remaining weak in geometric reasoning. “Growth” should therefore refer to actual capabilities rather than a vague global sense of becoming better.
Specificity makes intervention possible. “I am bad at English” is too broad. “I struggle to infer a character’s motive when the clue is spread across several paragraphs” is teachable.
The classroom environment matters
Mindset messages can be undermined if the surrounding environment signals that mistakes are shameful, ability labels are permanent, only the fastest students are valued or help-seeking is treated as weakness.
A growth-supportive environment makes revision normal, provides second attempts where appropriate, distinguishes error from worth, teaches help-seeking and allows students to observe improvement over time.
Parents: avoid both fixed labels and empty reassurance
- Instead of “You’re a natural at this,” say what the child can now do.
- Instead of “You’re just not a Maths person,” name the specific weak operation.
- Instead of “Just work harder,” ask what strategy is being used.
- Instead of “Don’t worry, you’ll definitely get an A,” identify the next measurable improvement.
- When a child improves, connect the improvement to evidence and process.
Tutors: capability should become less dependent on the tutor
A learner may appear to improve because the tutor becomes better at cueing them. True growth requires checking what remains when prompts are reduced. Use changed examples, delayed retrieval and independent attempts.
The tutoring goal is not a student who performs only inside the tutorial. It is a student whose capability travels.
Growth mindset and examination preparation
As an examination approaches, optimism should become increasingly operational. There is limited time, so students need accurate evidence about what can still improve and where effort has the highest return.
A useful question is not “Can I improve?”—usually some improvement remains possible—but “Which capability can improve enough within the remaining time to change performance?” This protects hope while respecting constraints.
Growth mindset and AI
AI can provide unlimited encouragement, but encouragement is cheap. Its more useful role is to help learners inspect processes: generate a changed practice item, compare two strategies, ask what evidence supports an answer, identify patterns across errors or help construct a repair plan.
AI should not flatter the learner into false confidence. A good learning system remains honest about current performance while keeping improvement routes visible.
A stronger growth model
For educational purposes, replace the simplistic equation belief + effort = success with a more useful sequence:
- Current state: What can the learner do now?
- Target: What capability should change?
- Cause: What is currently limiting performance?
- Instruction: What knowledge or strategy is needed?
- Practice: How will the operation become reliable?
- Feedback: What evidence will guide correction?
- Transfer: Can the capability survive a changed task?
- Update: What does the new evidence say about the learner now?
The endpoint is calibrated optimism
The strongest educational stance is neither “ability is fixed” nor “anyone can achieve anything if they believe enough.” It is calibrated optimism: many capabilities can develop substantially; current evidence matters; constraints are real; strategies differ in effectiveness; support matters; and conclusions about a learner should remain open to revision when new performance arrives.
That position is demanding because it requires both hope and measurement. It also gives children something better than reassurance: a believable route from where they are to what they can do next.
