Many comprehension errors begin because the child cannot translate the question stem into a simple job. The passage may be understood, yet wording such as what suggests, how did, what evidence or in what way leaves the student unsure what kind of answer is required.
This page uses Punggol Green Primary School only as the school-family context named in the preserved 2019 URL. Its reader job is question-stem translation: turn exam language into a plain-English job.
The old page contained historic Yishun/Punggol centre, tutor, telephone and generic syllabus claims. Those are not carried forward. eduKate Singapore is an independent tuition provider and is not affiliated with Punggol Green Primary School, MOE or SEAB.
Translate Before You Search
A student should be able to say what the question wants in ordinary language before returning to the passage.
| Question stem | Plain-English job |
|---|---|
| What suggests that…? | Find a clue that supports this idea |
| Why did…? | Give the cause or motive |
| How did A differ from B? | Give both sides of the comparison |
| What evidence shows…? | Select the strongest supporting detail |
| What can you infer? | Combine clues into a bounded conclusion |
Question Stems Contain the Answer Contract
- action;
- anchor;
- relationship;
- number of parts;
- evidence requirement.
The plain-English translation should preserve all five where relevant.
Do Not Simplify Away the Important Condition
A question such as Why was the character relieved after the call? is not merely “Why relieved?” The time anchor after the call narrows the evidence region.
Use Contrast Pairs
- What happened? vs Why did it happen?
- What did she feel? vs What showed that she felt it?
- What does the word mean? vs Why did the writer choose the word?
These pairs teach students which wording changes the job.
The Translation Routine
- Read the full stem.
- Underline action and anchor.
- Restate the job in simple words.
- Count the required answer parts.
- Search only after the contract is clear.
A Question-Stem Diagnostic
| Pattern | Likely issue |
|---|---|
| Knows passage but answers wrong relationship | stem translation |
| Gives claim when evidence requested | answer-contract mismatch |
| Misses second part | obligation counting |
| Can restate accurately before answering | task control improving |
How a 3-Pax Class Trains Stem Translation
In a maximum three-student group, learners can translate the same question before solving. The tutor can compare whether errors arise from task wording, evidence selection or expression.
Current MOE English Context
The MOE Primary English Language Syllabus 2020 develops strategic reading and purposeful response. Question-stem translation supports this by making task interpretation explicit before evidence search begins.
